Ashland boys third in water polo tourney BEAVERTON -- The Ashland boys water polo team picked up its first state tournament trophy with a third-place finish on Saturday. The Grizzlies downed top-ranked Sheldon 10-9 in overtime with stellar defense from freshman goalie Kyle Asher, who collected 14 blocked shots, and Dustin Asher, who had six steals. Ashland came back to tie the score at five going into halftime with two goals from Brad Scoles and one each from Dustin Asher, Jordan McFarland and Adam Foley. Aaron Goldman and Foley brought the Grizzlies back from a two-point deficit and Clayton Mattson gave them their first lead with a tip-in goal as time expired in the third period. Sheldon tied rallied in the fourth period to send the game into overtime.Jacob Salmond and Scoles put the game away two goals in the extra session. In earlier games, Ashland defeated Sam Barlow 10-5 to advance to the semifinals where the Grizzles fell to eventual state champion Newberg, 8-6. The Ashland girls had a tough draw against Parkrose, losing 10-3. Quinn Brightenburg led the Grizzlies with two goals and Alyssa Simonsen added the other. Goalie Liz Alrick blocked 11 shots. Ashland rebounded to top Lakeridge 5-4 in overtime with Vanessa Walker and Jessica Mattson scoring two goals each with Brightenburg adding another. The Grizzlies moved on to face Sunset with fifth-place at stake in the consolation finals. Keara Duggan scored two goals with Elisa Jessop and Brightenburg adding one apiece. Nonetheless, Ashland fell to the Apollos 15-4. Mattson and Walker were forced to watch the game from the bench due to injuries. Walker earned all-state honors for the girls with Mattson picking up honorable mention accolades. Alrick earned second-team all-tournament to go along with her all-state honors. Foley gained all-state recognition for the boys and Scoles earned honorable mention. Foley was also named to the all-tournament first team with Scoles picking up second-team honors.
