Cross-country ski lesson/tour Saturday, Jan. 26: Skiers will meet at 11 a.m. at Campers Cove on Hyatt-Prairie Road alongside Hyatt Lake. Southern Oregon Nordic Club member Michael Dawkins will provide a lesson followed by a ski tour of 4 to 7 miles. To carpool, either as a driver or rider, go to carpool locations in Medford or Ashland before 10 a.m. to find others who want to ride-share. Carpool locations are at the Rite Aid parking lot off Interstate 5, Exit 14, in Ashland, and at the north Fred Meyer parking lot (near the Goodwill trailer) off I-5, Exit 30, in Medford. This is an informal car pool system. Just show up, arrange rides and go. Drivers will appreciate a contribution for gas. Suggested contribution is $5 for a trip this length. To be sure of a ride, plan ahead with other members or try using Google groups to arrange carpooling ahead of time. For more information, call Dawkins at 541-482-2703. Leave a message and phone number and he will return your call. Project FeederWatch Saturday, Feb. 2: Help experts count birds that visit feeders at North Mountain Park Nature Center, 620 N. Mountain Ave., Ashland, from 9 to 10 a.m. Results will be submitted to Cornell University’s FeederWatch program. Admission is free. Call 541-488-6606. Bavarian Night at Mt. Ashland Saturday, Feb. 16: Bavarian Night is an annual fundraiser for the Mt. Ashland Ski Patrol. It’s a family-oriented event including night skiing, a fireworks show, live music, food specials and a raffle auction. For details, see www.mtashland.com/events-things-to-do/. Snowshoe hike Sunday, Feb. 17: KS Wild’s Michael Dotson will lead a moderately difficult, 3-4 mile winter snowshoe hike above the Rogue Valley from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Snow accumulation and levels will determine what trail the group hits. Hikers will likely find themselves among the snow-covered evergreens on Mount Ashland or in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument. Participants must have their own snowshoes, which can be rented for the day from several local retailers. Sign up at www.kswild.org/events to get more details about carpooling and what to bring.
