Crusaders shrug off deficit, rally past Vikes St. Mary's was at its best once it fell behind in District 6 boys soccer Tuesday. But St. Mary's rallied in the last 25 minutes with goals from senior forward Matt Burt, sophomore outside midfielder Chris Burwell and junior forward Daniel Pires, assisted by senior forward Thatcher Jones, to win, 3-1, on its home field. The Crusaders (5-1, 5-1 Dist. 6) are coming together nicely for coach Eric Wolff. "We're happy where we're at right now," Wolff said. "Each game, it seems we're controlling the ball better and better. We look forward to playing all these (District 6) teams a second time." Senior fullback Joel Frank keyed St. Mary's defensive performance against the Vikings (0-4, 0-4 Dist. 6). Frank Wharregard broke open a scoreless game in the second half, giving the Knights (1-3-1) a 1-0 lead. The Chieftains tied the game at 1-1 in the 70th minute on a goal by Tony Coma but missed an opportunity to win late in the second half on a failed penalty kick. Jed Dunlap notched the tying score in the 97th minute for Rogue River. Other goals for the Hornets (3-2, 3-2 Dist. 6) were by Gabe Hernandez, Nick Diaz, Ty Munoz and Walter Jones. Hernandez and Munoz also added assists, as did Jeff Mullis. Beau Brown scored both goals for Illinois Valley. Girls Kieffer stole the second-half kickoff and passed it to Tiger, who dribbled from midfield and blasted through the Pirates' seventh goal just 31 seconds into the second half. Phoenix enjoyed a whopping 53-1 advantage in shots on goal. The goal in the eighth minute by Schwartz helped Henley forge an early first-place tie atop the conference standings.
