I’m a liberal, and I've been told by my conservative friends that I'm genetically driven to spend someone else’s money, but this is beyond reason. How about being smart and reworking some of the vacancies downtown? The Lithia buildings look nice, and are close to the Police Department’s customer base. Plenty of parking, too. Medford is hardly crime central, which makes this project even more upsetting. Is secure parking necessary for overpriced urban assault vehicles or confiscated personal property for auction? I love the quote, “We will solve more cases” — with a new building? That’s like saying if we have a new library, I'll read better. We want to be safe, and we want to be protected, but multi-million-dollar buildings do neither. We continue to cut local social services and claim we have no money, but find millions for a shiny new cop shop. Priceless. Use the money we have to pay for infrastructure improvement, rehabbing existing structures for city services and then, use what’s left over for gym memberships for the Medford Police Department. Our money better spent, right? Joe D’Amato Talent A giant joke Is it just me, or are Medford and Jackson County competing to become the biggest paradox? On one hand you have a small casino that wants to add video games of chance to our area. Unfortunately, it will cause all sorts of problems such as more traffic, destructive gambling, the crime rate will escalate to an epic level and the downfall of humanity. Thank heavens lottery games of chance and video poker don't affect people the same way, nor do legalized pot, or breweries and wineries have any bad sides, even if they and the lottery are available on almost every corner or grocery store. My guess is that they have no impact on traffic, sewage or anything else the dreaded casino would bring. Just saying the way it looks to me, my enjoyment for going somewhere to have fun with some friends is pretty much out of the question since I neither smoke nor drink and am a senior so don't fit in with the younger generation. Seems like a giant joke to me. Penny Kochen Phoenix Don't go there I got a chuckle from the letters folks complaining about the traffic problems, and the potential for more of them near Trader Joe's if Costco moves near there. They are correct, of course, but I have a solution for their concerns. Don't go there! It works for me. Guy Parker Prospect A waste of trees Dave Swaney believes opponents of marijuana use have reason for concern. After reading his guest opinion Tuesday,  I can readily see why they should. Their concern, however, should be engendered not by the supposed "new" facts Swaney parrots from Bill Bennett's waste of trees, but instead by the incredible weakness inherent in the arguments Bennett presents. If that's the best prohibitionists can do, were I in their shoes, I'd be concerned also by the obvious failings of the arguments Bennett makes. Swaney attempts to buttress his wobbly position by claiming that his views are supported by "a who's who of scientific journals," and then lists such stellar examples as The New York Times, the LA Times, Huffington Post and an apparent press release from Northwestern University. Perhaps he believes that listing the New York Times and the LA Times twice increases their scientific value. Swaney may believe that Bennett’s experience as drug czar makes him credible, but what kind of credibility can we assign to Bennett when he offers that beheading drug dealers is “morally plausible?" Prohibitionists lost the marijuana battle in Oregon. With arguments like Bennett’s to work with, they’ll lose the national marijuana war, too.
