JACKSON COUNTY Deputy thwarts jail break Inmates try to break security glass Comment By Damian Mann Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Damian Mann Mail Tribune Posted Dec. 12, 2014 at 4:52 PM By Damian Mann Mail Tribune Posted Dec. 12, 2014 at 4:52 PM » Social News A quick-thinking sheriff’s deputy thwarted a recent alleged escape attempt by two inmates in the Jackson County Jail, including one in custody for suspected involvement in a robbery at U.S. Bank in September. Gerald Thomas Schram, 63, of Medford, and Henry Arthur Carr, 35, have been charged with attempting to escape and criminal mischief. They remain in jail without bail and are facing federal charges related to other offenses. Schram previously was arrested on burglary, theft, assault and weapons charges, according to court records. Carr was previously arrested for drug-related crimes, assault and racketeering. According to the sheriff’s department, an off-duty corrections deputy was leaving the jail Dec. 2 when he heard a suspicious noise coming from an upper-level cell window. Deputies immediately placed the jail in lockdown and counted all inmates. "The off-duty deputy did a great job," sheriff's Detective Eric Henderson said.  Deputies found the window in Schram’s cell had been damaged. The cost to replace the security glass exceeded $1,000. Henderson said he couldn't disclose what item from the cell was used to damage the glass. Cells typically have a sink, toilet and a small area for writing. "They used stuff damaged from inside their cell," Henderson said. Even if the off-duty deputy hadn't alerted other deputies, Henderson said the jail break would have been foiled. "The reality is that if he didn't hear noise, routine checks would have discovered what was going on," he said. Henderson said the name of the off-duty deputy was not going to be released. Detectives were able to identify the inmates involved, as well as uncover evidence of a possible co-conspirator outside the jail, Henderson said. The investigation is ongoing. In September, Medford police said Schram walked away from the Jackson County Work Release Center but was arrested Sept. 24 for allegedly robbing a U.S. Bank in Medford earlier that afternoon. He was arrested at his residence in the 300 block of Haven Street, where police said they discovered large amounts of cash tied to the bank robbery. Most of the money taken from the branch at 1242 Court St. was recovered, police said. Other evidence tying Schram to the crime was also discovered, but investigators declined to give further details. While the Dec. 2 escape attempt was thwarted, a jail break two years ago was successful. Bradley William Monical escaped on Nov. 19, 2012, by jumping from the third-story roof onto a nearby tree. The trees surrounding the jail were immediately cut down on the order of Sheriff Mike Winters. Monical was serving a 22-year prison sentence for robbing a bank in Coos County in April 2011. A year after his escape, Monical was arrested in Oregon City.
