John Carl Olson II, 21, had been living with his mother, 58-year-old Chon Olson, before the murder. Around 3:47 p.m. on April 2, John Olson reportedly called 911 from their apartment in the Medford Hotel on West Main Street. When police and paramedics arrived, they found Chon Olson had been stabbed, said Randy Schoen, Medford’s deputy police chief. Police arrested John Olson while emergency medical workers treated his mother for life-threatening injuries, Schoen said. She later was pronounced dead at Rogue Valley Medical Center, police said. A Jackson County grand jury on Tuesday indicted John Olson on one count of murder, said Beth Heckert, deputy district attorney. If convicted, he could receive a life sentence in prison. Murder carries a minimum 25-year prison term under Oregon’s Measure 11 sentencing guidelines. Neighbors said the mother and son argued frequently, adding that Olson seemed like a troubled young man. He had recently moved from Illinois to Medford. Olson will appear at 1:45 p.m. on April 16 in Jackson County Circuit Court to hear the charge against him. He remained in the Jackson County Jail on Tuesday without bail.
