LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, March 31 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 31, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Mar. 31, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Social justice Regarding a letter on Sunday, March 20: Justice is defined as "moral rightness, honor and fairness," social as "pertaining to human society." Social justice is not the opposite of justice, injustice is. Being human is not defined simply by what we own but by what we are and what we choose to be. Social justice does not "elevate the rights of the collective over the rights of the individual." It considers the rights and needs of all. Fairness is not sameness. It is balance. You may resent "paying for others' health care" when they are in need, but would you turn it down when you need it? If you think you have gotten where you are in life without the help of anyone, then you have merely forgotten those who have helped you. Social justice at its best is about opening doors for those left behind. It is about doing our share when we can, not hoarding the good for a privileged few. It is what America is about, creating a just society for all. Lois McWhorter Rogue River No time to relax I want to thank everyone who worked so hard to encourage our Oregon legislators, the governor and federal agencies to deny permits for the Jordan Cove LNG pipeline. They have helped to once again place Oregon at the head of the class in making responsible, creditable progress towards making the changes needed to reduce the effects of climate change. They have demonstrated that bottom-up political action can triumph over top-down corporate money and those who deny the relationship of fossil fuels to climate change. It is not time to relax, rather it is time to keep the pressure on, as I would expect an appeal of the latest decision. Look into Rogue Climate (For us Talentinos: Rogue Climate Talent), Southern Oregon Climate Action Now. Rogue Riverkeeper and other hardworking groups here in the valley. Keep informed about upcoming climate actions, talk to your friends and neighbors and call your local legislators We can do this. We can stop the runaway fossil-fuel train before it is too late. Let’s keep the momentum going. Ken Gosling Talent Be more tolerant In a March 19 letter to the editor a writer called Leonard Pitts a "useful idiot." He also called President Obama and Hillary Clinton liars and intimated that anyone who supports them is somehow mentally deranged. I take exception to those notions. I submit that to label someone who disagrees with you an idiot, a liar or a mental defective is precisely the kind of narrow-mindedness that is destroying our country. I admire Leonard Pitts and the courage he displays in speaking out about the injustices he witnesses. I also proudly support President Obama and Hillary Clinton and am certain that I'm not afflicted by any sort of mental disease. I sincerely hope we can all learn to be more tolerant of those with different points of view. And I firmly believe that more open-mindedness and less of the kind of bigotry espoused in the above-mentioned letter, is our country's only saving grace.
