Grapefruits. Cabbage soup. Yawn! Eating should be enjoyable, not miserable. Don’t fall prey to boring diets and boring meals. Here are some easy ways to spice up your routine, avoid the diet rut and still lose weight. Eat clean: If you’re tired of getting stuck, setting tight restrictions might be to blame. Instead, aspire to eat clean. This means ditching the processed and packaged foods. The meal combinations are endless with fresh veggies, fruit, meat, whole grains, and low-fat dairy at your choosing. Some days you will do better than other days, and that’s perfectly okay. You don’t have to become the perfect clean eating human. Simply lean your life toward healthier choices. Meatless Mondays: If a chicken breast with steamed vegetables is your everyday meal, it’s time to mix it up before boredom sidelines your diet. How can you do this? Go meatless on Mondays. Challenge your taste buds and cooking skills by eating vegetarian proteins like tofu, legumes, eggs, and quinoa. Who knows, you might just find a new favorite! Explore Pinterest: From healthy pancakes to healthy burgers to healthy cookies, Pinterest has it! Use this awesome resource as your virtual healthy cookbook for meal and snack ideas. With thousands of recipes, a diet rut is nearly impossible. Cheat: Cheat? Yes, cheat. You are more likely to crash and burn (i.e. eat the entire cake instead of just one slice) if you don’t give into temptations every once in awhile. Plan a weekly cheat meal. Maybe it’s a “healthy” version of your favorite dessert or maybe even the real thing! Either way, eat what you really want and put cravings to rest. — Life Fitness CHILDREN’S HEALTH Warm weather can affect infants’ skin in multiple ways. Exposure to heat and chlorinated water can dry out their skin. Babies may also develop a heat rash, an uncomfortable, red, prickly rash that can appear on a baby’s face, neck or bottom. And intertrigo — a raw, oozy red rash that appears in skin folds — can show up at any time of year, but may get even worse in summer. This can be bacterial or fungal, so it’s important to check with your doctor if you see a rash appear in those areas. — More Content Now SENIOR HEALTH Osteoporosis — a bone disease that affects many senior women — causes bones to become weak and brittle. While there are no early symptoms, according to the Mayo Clinic, later symptoms include back pain, loss of height over time and a stooped posture. Experts recommend that you talk to your doctor about osteoporosis if you went through early menopause, took corticosteroids for several months at a time, or either of your parents had hip fractures. — More Content Now NEW RESEARCH According to a new study published earlier this month in The Journal of the American Heart Association, chronic depression may double the risk of stroke in older adults. Lead study author Paola Gilsanz, a researcher at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, said the study shows that mood-improving treatments like counseling or medications may not completely or immediately address the stroke risk tied to psychological problems. — More Content Now BOOK PICK ‘The Dorito Effect,’ by Mark Schatzker A lively and important argument from an award-winning journalist proving that the key to reversing America’s health crisis lies in the overlooked link between nutrition and flavor. In “The Dorito Effect,” Mark Schatzker shows us how our approach to the nation’s number one public health crisis has gotten it wrong. The epidemics of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes are not tied to the overabundance of fat or carbs or any other specific nutrient. Instead, we have been led astray by the growing divide between flavor—the tastes we crave—and the underlying nutrition. — Simon & Schuster MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 22, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Comment or view comments   /* $( document ).ready(function() { // Jquery mobile is trying to style the button and leaving a blank gry button on top of a white button $("#viafouracoms .vf-comment-controls li.vf-right").html(' Submit '); });*/ »  STAY INFORMED   Email NewsLetter   Sign Up Today   Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. calendar Connect with MailTribune.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services Home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Announcements Obituaries Story ideas Since you asked Alerts Email Alerts RSS Feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Propel Marketing Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed   Email newsletter   Sign Up Today   Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
