The Rogue Valley Soccer Club’s Mutiny team defeated their predecessors, the RVSC United in a thrilling, 4-3 overtime U-19 final at North Medford High School. Most of the United players, who are now college freshmen, played for the Mutiny last season, and even wore last season’s Mutiny jerseys. Mutiny coach Cindy Jolly knew her team, which is composed entirely of high school players except for MacAlester (Minn.) freshman and Ashland grad Scott Beaver, was in for a rough game against United. Advertisement "After watching their previous games I was pretty nervous," said Jolly, who is a girls junior varsity coach at South Medford High. "We knew it would be tough because so many of them play at a university." South Medford junior Spencer Hunter helped the Mutiny overcome jitters with two regulation goals; one on a direct free kick and another on a header with the assist from Klamath Union senior Tyler Casey. The latter goal sent the game into overtime. "Spencer made some terrific plays," Jolly said. "The runs that he made really helped us out." United kept pace with the Mutiny on goals by Crater senior Scott Malone and South Medford grad Pat Lower, who played for St. Mary’s College as a freshman. Lower earned MVP honors for the U- 19 pool. United drew first blood in overtime when Oregon State forward Ryan Johnson headed in a rebound after Mutiny goalie Cameron Guthrie parried a shot in the 96th minute. Ashland senior Alex Christlieb tied the game for the third time with a penalty kick after Casey was taken down by a defender in the box. "We didn’t want to lose it like that," Hunter said. "In overtime they ran out of gas and we kept going." In the second of two 15-minute overtime periods, Southern Oregon Conference MVP Ryan Wallenberg of South Medford sealed the upset for the Mutiny, heading in a shot from 10 yards out on a cross from his high school teammate Dan Hathaway. "They just did an unbelievable job," Jolly said. "We had trouble coming together all season and at this tournament it finally happened." United coach Chris Gallegos was disappointed but not discouraged. "It was fun," the Crater High boys coach said. "It was nice to be out here with a bunch of all-stars. They played valiantly." The U19 final culminated the three-day, 158-team extravaganza. With all other finals completed, fans and players flocked to Hoffbuhr Field to watch the civil war of RVSC teams. "We wanted there to be a Medford vs. Medford big boy final," Hunter said. "And it turned out good." RVSC CENTAURS 2, SANTA ROSA UNITED 1 — At Ashland, Faubian Garcia-Flores and Brian Wagner chipped in goals and Mike Belzberg turned away all but one shot in the net to lead the Centaurs to the U16 title at Southern Oregon University. Garcia-Flores, an Ashland High sophomore, earned pool MVP honors for the Centaurs, who lost only once this season. ASC FURY 2, SOUTH HILL REVOLUTION 1— At Ashland, the Fury upset the favored Revolution from Puyallup, Wash., in the U15 final. ASC went 4-1 in the tournament at Ashland Middle School. FC PHOENIX OUTKAST 3, RENO STRIDERS 0 — The Outkast capped a nearly flawless weekend in the U14 pool with a shutout victory over the Striders. Phoenix won all five of its games and outscored opponents 13-1. RVSC SHOCKWAVE 2, SANTA ROSA UNITED BLUE 0 — Logan Sanchez scored both of the Shockwave’s goals in the final, earning him U11 MVP honors. RVSC scored 24 goals on the weekend while only yielding two. RVSC ROGUE FC 2, ASC IGUANAS 1 — RVSC won the battle of southern Oregon teams in the U13 third-place final. Girls RVSC STORM 3, RVSC ARSENAL 0 — The Storm cruised to the 19-and-under title with a shutout win over a rival Arsenal team. South Medford junior Courtney Quinowski was one goal shy of a hat trick with two goals and Crater junior Sarah LaFontaine added a first-half goal. "This is basically a U17 team playing in a U19 tournament," Storm coach Grant Bryant said. "We had a lot of fun and the girls played great." Goalkeepers Kadi Driver of North Medford and Karyn Allen of North Valley combined for the shutout. The duo allowed only one goal all tournament. The Storm outscored opponents 15-1 over the weekend. In the third-place final, GPYSC Emg edged RVSC Tsunami, 1-nil. BEND UNITED SURGE 1, RVSC XPLOSION 0 — The Xplosion cruised through U14 pool play with four wins by at least three goals but fell short in the final to the Surge. JUVENTUS DIABLOS 3, RVSC VORTEX 1 — In the U13 final, RVSC’s Dani Compher found the net, but it wasn’t enough against the Diablos of Sunnyvale, Calif. Erin Bedell, Caitlin Karwin and Ali Haag all scored for Juventus. GPYSC CLASH 5, ASC TSUNAMI 0 — The Clash completed a perfect sweep of the U12 Girls Classic field with a shutout over the Tsunami, their second in as many days.
