GP uses long ball to salvage SOH split Apr 27, 2014 12:00 AM A A GRANTS PASS — Grants Pass' Drew VanEss hit a walk-off grand slam in his team's 7-6 win over South Medford after the Panthers shut out the Cavemen, 10-0, in the opener during Southern Oregon Hybrid baseball at Grants Pass High on Saturday. In Game 2, South led 6-3 entering the bottom of the seventh before Grants Pass rallied. Josh D'Amico led off with a single, Kadin Lopez got on base using a Panther throwing error and, with two outs, Easton Bents singled to left field to load the bases. Enter VanEss, who ended things with his blast. South owned a 3-0 advantage before Cameron Mathews crushed a three-run homer for the Cavemen (4-13, 1-5 SOH) in the bottom of the fifth inning. In the top of the seventh, the Panthers' Brady Breeze hit an RBI triple before scoring on a wild pitch. Jake Perry's RBI single gave the South (11-7, 2-4) its 6-3 edge. The Panthers' Brandon Lupton went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Ryan Carle 2-for-4 with a run and Perry 2-for-2. In the opener, Lupton threw a one-hit shutout with six strikeouts and one walk, Caleb Bell finished 2-for-4 with two runs and Jimmy Sporer added a hit, two RBIs and a run. Junior Steen Fredrickson took matters into his own hands in the first game for the Grizzlies (12-3), pitching a four-hit shutout and driving in three runs. Fredrickson struck out eight and didn't issue a walk. He also scored two runs. Nick Sanderson offered offensive support, going 2-for-3 and driving in three runs, and Eric Carlson was 2-for-3 and scored twice. Cade Kissel had two of the four hits for North Valley (5-11). In the nightcap, Ashland broke open a tight game with six runs in the fourth to take a 10-2 lead. Kyle Milgram had a two-run double and Carlson followed with a two-run single in the inning, which included four hits and two errors. Fredrickson, who had an RBI, and Max Montgomery each went 2-for-4 with a run for the Grizzlies. Kyle Streeter was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Knights. Eagle Point's Jonathan Wilson finished with a hit, a run and three RBIs. Zach Kentner recorded a hit, a run and two RBIs for Phoenix (6-10). In Game 2, Patrick Budden tallied three hits and three RBIs for Klamath Union (5-10-1, 3-6) and Fretz recorded two hits for Hidden Valley.
