Not so in girls Southern Oregon Conference basketball Friday. Tenth-ranked North defeated the Cavers, 54-42, but only after stemming a rally in the second half. The Tornado (14-4, 7-1 SOC) led 33-14 at halftime and threatened to duplicate the 71-31 whipping it put on the Cavers to start the SOC season. But Grants Pass (11-6, 5-3 SOC) pulled to within five points before North’s Caitlin Seeley hit a big 3 and Kailey Bostwick made four free throws in the fourth quarter. Advertisement "The last time was the first game of the (SOC) season and we just got dejected quickly and taken out of it right from the start," said Grants Pass coach Robert Lingo. "This time the kids responded, we just didn’t score as well as you’d like to. But we didn’t give up quite as easily." North had some incentive as well. Its first conference loss came Tuesday at Ashland in a game coach Tim Karrick deemed lackluster. "We didn’t play with a lot of intensity and focus," he said. "We talked about it in practice, and I was pleased with the way the girls came out. We lost some intensity in the second half, but you have to give Grants Pass credit for battling back and not giving up." Michelle Westermann tallied 13 points, 10 rebounds and four steals for North, and Mellisa Eastwold had 13 points, four rebounds and four assists. ASHLAND 67, EAGLE POINT 40 — At Ashland, four Grizzlies reached double figures in scoring to lead Ashland (14-4, 5-3 SOC) to an easy win. Sophomore guard Jamie Roupp led all players with 15 points while Abeni Hill added 14 points and eight rebounds. Hilary Huyett and Alysse Carlson had good all-around games, combining for 23 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds. The Grizzlies climbed back into a tie for third place in the conference and won their second straight game after dropping three in a row. Eagle Point was led by 13 points from junior Salina Sychla. The Panthers’ Katie Singler, who had one of her finest games with 15 points and seven rebounds, tied it with a 3-pointer early in the fourth. But foul trouble to her late in the period and teammate Brittany Farrer earlier hampered South. The Panthers (5-12, 3-5 SOC) already were without leading scorer Marissa Towry, who sprained an ankle Tuesday and might not return to action until next Friday. Farrer scored 11 points, and Breanna Banuelos had seven points and four assists. ROSEBURG (49) — Martin 3, Stephens 6, Jorgensen 10, Thompson 0, David 2, Corder 11, Fuller 17. Totals: 14 17-27 49. CRATER 66, KLAMATH UNION 51 — At Central Point, Whitney Black set a school record with six 3-pointers and dished six assists as Crater remained in a first-place tie with North Medford in the SOC. Black, who scored 20 points, bettered the mark of five 3s set by three players — Sarah Pool, Teri Schneider and Erin Dippel. Pool did it three times. Dani Montgomery scored 21 for the Comets (12-6, 7-1 SOC). She and Black halted a KU rally in the third quarter, when the Pelicans scored the first six points. But Black sandwiched two 3s around a three-point play by Montgomery in a 9-2 run that put the Comets in command. Katie Robertson scored 18, and she and Montgomery each had eight rebounds.
