Mail Tribune / Jim Craven North clears first hurdle Tornado girls, boys top Roseburg, EP in SOC-opening meet By DON HUNT Mail Tribune EAGLE POINT — North Medford High sprinter Emily Dunn barely worked up a sweat during a triangular track and field meet Tuesday at Eagle Stadium. Dunn anchored the Black Tornado’s 4x100-meter relay team to victory and won the 100 dash about 30 minutes later. Then she retired to the grandstands and cheered on her teammates for the duration of the meet. Not that the Tornado girls needed a full day from their senior speedster. They won 10 of the 17 events, added nine second-place finishes and scored 95 points to romp past Roseburg (60) and Eagle Point (26) on an unseasonably warm day in Southern Oregon. In the boys meet, North Medford eked out a 71-70 win over Roseburg. Eagle Point was a distant third with 40 points. Dunn, who has been a workhorse for North Medford since her freshman year, normally would have participated in four events Tuesday. But she broke the fifth metatarsal bone in her right foot last season and had surgery over the summer. "We’re not going to rush her back into this," North Medford coach Mark Hodges said. "It’s a long season, and we want her healthy at the end." Dunn owns individual school records in the 100 (12.1) and triple jump (34 feet, 8 inches) and has run legs on North Medford’s school- and district-record 4x100 (48.46) and school-record 4x400 (4:00.8) relays. She also had the school record in the long jump until teammate Rosana Medina broke it last year. It could be that Dunn’s relentless work habits in practice and her desire to stay busy during meets had something to do with her injury. She first noticed a dull pain in her foot during January of 2002 when she was out running hills. The pain kept getting worse, but Dunn wasn’t about to tell anyone for fear of having her junior season end prematurely. "I just dealt with it," she said. The discomfort did, however, knock Dunn out of the long and triple jumps and might have been a factor at the 100 finals at district last year, when she was upset by South Medford’s Kaylyn Knutson. Then, during a workout in June, Dunn felt the bone completely fracture. "That’s when I knew it was time to see a doctor," she said, noting that the bone had moved five millimeters from its original position. Dunn is thrilled to be approaching full strength and was able to laugh off her performance in the 100 Tuesday when she nearly fell down coming out of the blocks and stumbled to a time of 13.1. "The starter had a little bit of a quick trigger — I wasn’t ready for that," she said. "I saw everyone take off, and it was like, ‘Oh gosh, you better get going!’" Dunn had the lead by the 60-meter mark and beat runner-up Lisa Louie, her teammate, by one-tenth of a second. As expected, the Tornado girls dominated on the track, winning eight of the 10 events. Highlights included: Danielle Jordan winning the 1,500 in 4:57.4 and the 3,000 in 10:44.4. The senior transfer from Baker City made her Tornado track debut a successful one. Perhaps most impressively, Jordan ran a leg on North Medford’s junior varsity 4x400 relay team just 10 minutes after finishing the 3,000. "I’m from the old school, and I think that (the relay leg on the heels of a distance race) was good for her," North Medford distance coach Marnie Mason said. "It’ll help her speed and her kick. "When she gets in a big race and someone throws in a surge, she’ll be ready for it." Medina winning the 100-meter hurdles in 16.0. The time wasn’t spectacular, but Medina was running the event for the first time in a meet. "I was able to three-step every hurdle — that was my goal today," said Medina, who finished fourth at the Class 4A state meet last year in the 300 hurdles. "It felt pretty good." Medina also won the 200 in 27.2 and ran a leg on North Medford’s winning 4x400 relay that clocked 4:11.7. Roseburg’s Kristen Bitter, who equaled her lifetime best of 5-4 to claim the high jump and soared to a good early-season mark of 35-1½ in the triple jump. Eagle Point’s Aubrey Harrington matched her lifetime best and school record of 10-6 in the pole vault. She then made three attempts at 11 feet but couldn’t get over the bar. On the boys side, Eagle Point vaulter Robbie Johnston stole the show. The junior equaled his lifetime and school-record best of 15 feet and then took three cracks at 15-4, which would have been a district record. "Everyone said I was over the bar by at least three inches on the 15-foot vault, but I think I ran out of gas after that," said Johnston, who finished third at the state meet last season. "That one (the 15-footer) felt really good technically." North Medford junior weightman David Faaeteete also fared well, reaching 51-7 in the shot put and 151-3 in the discus. Faaeteete was a bit frustrated, however, after launching the shot 56 feet in warmups. "I did the same thing yesterday in practice," said Faaeteete, a major college football recruit who has grown to 6-foot-3 and 265 pounds. "It’ll be there. I just need to get consistent in my form and stand up to the pressure of a meet." North Medford’s Alex Grigas posted some good early-season marks of his own, going 19-9 to win the long jump and 42-0½ to take the triple jump.
