Jordan Thomas Johnston, 23, described as a "San Diego transient" in jail logs, was released on his own recognizance because of facility overcrowding, officials said. Logs show Johnston was booked into the jail at 4:39 p.m. Sunday on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, methamphetamine possession and distribution of a controlled substance. Jail officials said he was released on his own recognizance at about 9:15 p.m. Police received calls of a male smoking marijuana his car parked in a lot in the 2500 block of Highway 62 at about 2:30 p.m. A responding officer saw the car, a gold Acura four-door, driving north on Highway 62 away from Abby's Pizza and pulled the vehicle over near Lava Lanes, just up the road. The officer ran the plates and discovered the car had been reported stolen out of San Diego. At least six police cruisers responded to the scene to conduct a felony car stop, a procedure used in high-risk traffic stops that utilizes multiple officers and vehicles for increased protection and safety. Johnston was arrested and the two passengers in the car — both local residents — were released. Reach reporter Ryan Pfeil at 541-776-4468 or [email protected] .
