Sutherland, Crater’s senior all-conference shortstop, drove in the winning run in both ends of a Comet twin-bill sweep over South Medford at Fagone Field. In the opener, Cristofaro came out on the winning end of a 1-0 pitcher’s duel against South’s Jen Mendenhall. Then the Comets won the second game 5-4 in 15 innings, with Cristofaro going the distance. In Game 2, after tying the game 4-all in the seventh, the Comets had to survive two close calls at home to send the game into extra innings. Shortstop Simone Hubbard’s error on Angela Bettenburg’s grounder opened the door for the Comets in the top of the seventh. Bettenburg was sacrificed to second, then scored when Mindy Banks’ push bunt got through the right side of the infield. Advertisement South (11-6, 6-4 SOC) threatened in the bottom half when Jackie Chaplin walked and stole second with one out. Jonni Byrne singled to short right, but right fielder Kristin Davidson threw Chaplin out at the plate. Byrne went to second on the play. Mendenhall followed with a single to center and Byrne was also thrown out trying to score. "It looked like Jonni (Byrne) was in to me," South Medford coach Dan Marshall said. "Both throws had to be perfect and they were." Neither team scored until the 15th inning when Cristofaro singled with one out and Sutherland delivered an RBI double. The Panthers made it exciting again when Alex Jordahl walked with two outs. This time Chaplin lined a double in the gap and Jordahl tried unsuccessfully to score from first. "At first Banks misplayed the ball in left, then recovered," said Marshall. "I tried to have Jordahl score and tie it up. It was a real close call." Earlier, Sutherland’s bases-clearing double scored three runs to break a scoreless tie in the third inning. South Medford answered with four runs in the fifth to take the lead. Mendenhall singled, then with two out, Bethany Stousland walked and Desiree Millette’s hit-and-run single scored Mendenhall. Jordahl produced an RBI single and Chaplin a two-run base hit to give South a 4-3 lead. "We came back and all we had to do was close it out," said Marshall. "But we made an error and let them tie it up. It was tough to get three girls thrown out at the plate." In Game 1, both pitchers struck out seven, with Cristofaro allowing three hits and Mendenhall just two. Crater scored the game’s only run in the third when Susan Winningham led off with a double and scored on Sutherland’s grounder up the middle. "(Sutherland) was definitely the offensive star," said Marshall. "She also made play after play at shortstop." South’s best chance against Cristofaro was in the bottom of the third when Stousland singled and Millette walked with no outs. But the Panthers got no further. "It was a typical Southern Oregon Conference ballgame," said Marshall. "Both pitchers dominated the game." NORTH MEDFORD 5, KLAMATH UNION 0 — At Klamath Falls, North Medford senior pitcher Kendra Strahm threw a one-hitter, with the only hit coming from the Pelicans leadoff batter in the first inning. Strahm pitched a solid game after the initial hit, finishing with four strikeouts and no walks in the shutout. North freshman Emily Morrill led the Black Tornado offensive attack with three hits and an RBI. Deni Rowley, Katie Gould and Tiffany Schmelzer each chipped in with two hits for North (12-7, 5-4 SOC). The second game of the doubleheader was rained out in the fifth inning with the score tied at 0. The game will be made up on Tuesday. EAGLE POINT 4-0, GRANTS PASS 1-2 — At Grants Pass, Kelsey Heider fired a two-hitter for Eagle Point in the opener, but junior pitcher Ashley Franko did even better in the nightcap with a one-hitter for Grants Pass. Heider struck out nine, walked one and went 2-for-2 at the plate. The Eagles (11-7, 3-7 SOC) overcame a 1-0 deficit with three runs in the fifth. The rally was highlighted by a two-run single from Brittney Griggs and Shannon Richardson’s RBI hit. The Cavers (11-8, 5-5 SOC) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Justine Cerda tripled and scored on an error. Griggs added two hits, two runs and two RBIs and Kirsten Emigh provided two hits for the Eagles. In Game 2, Franko struck out four and didn’t walk a batter. She only allowed a fourth-inning single by sophomore Terrah Whipple. Junior Tess Bransfield had RBI singles in the third and fifth innings to account for both Grants Pass runs. In the five-inning opener, Kim Posey went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run to pace the Indians’ 13-hit attack. Ali Paz, Jasmine Crowe and Tanya Johnston added two hits apiece. The Grizzlies’ (7-14, 0-10 SOC) three hits came from Cate Gibbs, Bailey Hasty and Sammi Gilbert. In Game 2, Ashland sophomore pitcher Jasmine Smith had the Indians stymied through five innings on one hit, but Roseburg (15-3, 10-0 SOC) used singles by Kristen Harris and Brandi Campos and a two-run single by Paz to score four runs in the sixth. Emily McLaughlin opened the third with a single for Ashland and Hasty added a seventh-inning single.
