PREP VB: Comets boost MWL win streak By Mail Tribune staff Oct 18, 2022 09:35 PM A A CENTRAL POINT — Crater senior outside hitter Kendra Bittle recorded 15 kills and eight digs as the Comets captured their fourth straight victory with a 25-12, 25-19, 25-9 decision over Churchill on senior night at Scenic Middle School. Crater has yet to give up a single set in MWL play, winning 27 in a row, and with one more Midwestern League victory, the Comets (15-4, 9-0 MWL) can lock up the league’s top seed to the Class 5A state playoffs. Crater’s next opportunity will come Thursday night in Eagle Point. Senior setter Kate Stidham logged 33 assists, seven digs and three aces for the Comets, who also picked up eight kills and eight digs from fellow senior outside hitter Maddie Kocina and seven digs and two aces from senior Lilliana Reid. Crater sophomore middle blocker Alexa Gugliotta had a breakout night with eight kills and a pair of blocks. The Lancers dropped to 6-12 overall and 4-6 in MWL. SOUTH MEDFORD 3, WILLAMETTE 0: South Medford enjoyed a solid senior night as Katie Clevenger had 12 kills, five assists, two aces and one block and Baylee Davis added 26 assists and five digs to lead the Panthers to a 25-10, 25-17, 25-20 win in their Southwest Conference finale. Cameron Christian added six digs and two kills and Naomi Johnson had four kills, three aces and two blocks for South Medford (21-6, 10-2 SWC). Mayen Akpan added seven kills, Brooke Johnston had three aces and three kills and Lola Horton chipped in with four kills for a Panther team that assured itself at least second place in the SWC. ROSEBURG 3, NORTH MEDFORD 0: At Roseburg, North Medford came out of the gates a little flat and by the time it started to get its rhythm going, it was too late as Roseburg picked up a 25-14, 25-18, 25-22 Southwest Conference win. Senior outside hitter Olivia Stubenrauch paced the Black Tornado (8-12, 4-7 SWC) with five kills and 10 digs as fellow seniors Maddie Blake and AJ Brooks added four kills apiece. Blake also led North Medford, which is in fourth place behind Roseburg (15-5, 8-3), with 10 assists while junior defensive specialist Raegan Boice chipped in three aces and junior middle blocker Kylie Miller came up with a pair of blocks. MAZAMA 3, EAGLE POINT 2: At Eagle Point, Addison Holcomb provided 17 kills and 11 digs and Baylee Mullen had seven kills but Eagle Point couldn’t close out the nonleague match as Mazama prevailed 23-25, 25-27, 25-19, 25-18, 15-11. Emma Kness, Abby Trautman and Megan Carr each added six kills for the Eagles (9-7), while Makynlee Schauffler had 30 assists, 12 digs and eight aces. Trautman also had 12 digs and three blocks, with Kness notching 23 digs, Carr adding three blocks and Jaylinn Holte posting 15 digs against the Vikings (14-7). HENLEY 3, PHOENIX 0: At Phoenix, Ami Safady had eight kills and three blocks but Phoenix couldn’t quite get going in a Skyline Conference loss, 25-13, 25-17, 25-9. The Pirates dropped to 5-14 overall and 1-7 in Skyline play, while Henley moved to 13-4 and 7-1. ROGUE RIVER 3, BROOKINGS-HARBOR 0: At Rogue River, senior Grace McQuain set a career-high with 12 blocks as Rogue River closed its season on a high note on senior night, seizing a 25-23, 25-20, 25-22 Far West League triumph. The Chieftains (5-11, 2-8 FWL) received 14 kills and four aces from Mikayla Moore and fellow senior Avery Bushey was solid defensively and registered four kills and a block. With the loss, the Bruins dropped to 2-16 overall and 0-9 in FWL play. volleyball.jpg
