St. Marys advances MONMOUTH A young St. Marys volleyball team played like poised veterans on Thursday. With only two seniors on the roster, the Crusader played mistake-free while taking out first-round opponent Wallowa 15-8, 15-12 in the Class 2A state volleyball tournament. "We dont make a lot of mistakes," said St. Marys coach James Joy. "I think they (Wallowa) were a little unsure in the first game and we took advantage." The fourth-ranked Crusaders (20-10) face third-ranked Amity today at 12:30 p.m. in a second-round match. St. Marys used Kathryn Zielonys seven-point service run to turn an early deficit into a 10-4 advantage to take control of Game 1. In Game 2, the Crusaders shot out to a 10-5 lead before Wallowa crawled back to go up 11-10. St. Marys took a 14-10 lead behind the serving of Kristina Easton and big plays from Brittany Farrer and Christina Vaninetti and made good on its fourth match-point attempt to seal the win. Chrissy Seus had eight kills and 11 digs to lead the Crusaders, while Vaninetti added nine kills. Two-time defending state champion Amity, which beat Glendale to advance, now awaits. "They are the defending state champs two times," said Joy of Amity. "Its a big game, but I guess they are all big from here on out." GERVAIS 10-15-15, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 15-13-8 At Monmouth, despite a strong start, Cascade Christian dropped two straight games in a Class 2A state-tournament, first-round game at Western Oregon University. The Challengers took out second-ranked Gervais in the first game and led 13-10 in Game 2 but couldnt put it away. Cascade Christian (22-5) plays Weston McEwen at 8 a.m. today in the consolation bracket. "The match was within our reach," said Cascade Christian coach Susan Gmur. "We made four serving errors in the last game that really hurt." Senior setter Whitney Brookins had 46 assists for the Challengers, while Krystle Holtz led the way with six kills. Senior middle Kristin Salamone also contributed for Cascade with a solid effort in neutralizing a lanky Gervais front line. "Considering what we have to work with in facilities these girls have accomplished a lot," said Gmur.
