The same can be said about taking American jazz to the East and blending it with Gypsy folk traditions. Rhode Island ensemble Occidental Gypsy continues to pioneer the sound of world Gypsy music. Its mix of uptempo, high-energy rhythms of Gypsy swing melded with catchy melodic hooks of pop and complex structures of jazz delivers an appealing listening experience. It's a bit of jazz, some catchy strains of pop, and a whole lot of "Gypsified" swing. Siskiyou Music Project will present the group at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 14, as part of its Jazz in the Vineyard concert at Paschal Winery, 1122 Suncrest Road, Talent. There's more to Occidental Gypsy's shows than music. Violinist Eli Bishop, lead guitarist Brett Feldman, bassist Jeff Feldman, guitarist Jeremy Frantz and percussionist Erick Cifuentes are energetic entertainers who interact with fans and invite audience participation at each performance. On stage, dialog between band members also entertains audiences. When Occidental Gypsy decided to "Gypsify" Michael Jackson's "Thriller" on the band's debut album, "Over Here," released in 2011, it quickly garnered critical acclaim and has continued to gather rave reviews. Motif Magazine wrote, "Listeners will surely be all in with Occidental Gypsy's 'Over Here'," and defines the band as "terrific and unpretentious fab four." The band originally formed as a straight-ahead Gypsy jazz quartet — founded by brothers Brett and Jeff Feldman. With the release of "Over Here" and the addition of new members, the band has taken on a far more diverse, sophisticated and eclectic sound. One that can take listeners to soaring heights by violinist Bishop and percussionist Cifuentes. The band also occasionally taps such international talents to join it on stage as world and reggae singer Yuki Nakajima and jazz violinist, mandolin player and composer Jason Anick. Live, Occidental Gypsy compliments its original material with arranged "Gypsified" covers. It's approach to world, pop, jazz and dance music stems from the influence of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Gra Live, the band complements original material with expertly arranged ‘Gypsified’ covers. Bishop began his musical studies with the violin at age 3. His education continued at the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University in Nashville and the Berklee College of Music in Boston. His studies of various musical styles — including classical, western swing, rock, country and jazz — provided Bishop with opportunities to perform with a range of talents such as Vince Gill and the Time Jumpers, the Wooten Brothers, Bill Evans and Wynton Marsalis. Occidental Gypsy performs in such venues as Nighttown in Cleveland, Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, and Blue Wisp Jazz Club in Cincinnati. The band has shared stages with Rikki Lee Jones, Jorma Kaukenen, Stanley Jordan, Joe Sample, Tony Rice and David Bromberg, who was quoted as saying, "These guys have great singing, fantastic guitar and violin work, and high-energy originals that leave the crowd crazy.
