New Year's Eve celebrations of all sorts — and for young and old — promise good times to ring in 2016. 1. New Year's Eve Community Dance Party This is an annual favorite. Jerry Attrick & The Pacemakers will play a mix of classic rock, funk, jazz, Latin and klezmer tunes during the "Rock of All Ages" dance party at 8:30 p.m. at Temple Emek Shalom, 1800 E. Main St., Ashland. The band — David Young on guitar, Gary Wade on bass, Gabe Young on sax and oboe, Dennis Freese on sax, flute and clarinet, Mike Fitch on drums and percussion and Jack Hopfinger on guitar — prides itself on vocal harmonies and can move from funk to Cream, The Beatles, Grateful Dead, Duke Ellington, a hora waltz, Latin rhythms, bossa nova, Middle Eastern snake dance, Texas two-step and swing. Admission is $10, $5 for those younger than 21 and free for children 5 and younger. Refreshments will be available or bring your own. A sleeping room for children will be provided. Dirty Dozen Brass Band Ring in the New Year with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band at the Historic Ashland Armory, 208 Oak St. The Louisiana-based ensemble revolutionized New Orleans brass band music by adding funk, bebop and soul to the style. There will be a New Year's Eve countdown with a Champagne toast, and a late-night dance party with DJ Dragonfly. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. The show is open to ages 21 and older. Tickets are $35 in advance and can be purchased online at liveatthearmory.com or Music Coop, 268 E. Main St. Tickets will be $40 the day of the show. Food and a full bar will be available. 3. Swing at Firehouse Dance Hall Southern Oregon Swing will host a West Coast swing dance at 9 p.m. at Firehouse Dance Hall, 44 N. Front St., Medford. Dance to 4/4 beats and radio hits played by DJ Dave Kahn. Requests are welcome. Admission is $10. Appetizers and sparkling cider will be served. Call 541-924-7981. 4. ScienceWorks Museum The third annual Noon Year's Eve Celebration is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at ScienceWorks Museum, 1500 E. Main St., Ashland. Revelers who don't want to stay up late will find a day of innovative programs for families and a balloon drop at noon. Visitors can make their own party hats and noisemakers and participate in a sparkling cider toast to ring in 2016. Instead of having the traditional ball drop, ScienceWorks will hold an Egg Drop Challenge. Contestants can design containers to hold and protect a raw egg, to be dropped from 20 feet. Drops will happen at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The museum will provide construction materials. Young musicians from Creekside Fiddlers will perform throughout the event. Tickets are $10, $30 for a family, and can be purchased online at scienceworksmuseum.org or at the door. 5. Sacred Walk to 2016 Celebrate the New Year with a more introspective, meditative approach at the 17th annual Community Labyrinth Walk at 4 p.m. at First United Methodist Church's Wesley Hall, 175 N. Main St., Ashland. There will be a 36-foot canvas depicting a labyrinth and rosters of dancers and musicians will perform from 3:30 p.m. to midnight. On Friday, Jan. 1, live music and dancers will perform from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., when the closing ceremony begins. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Call 541-482-4132. Here's what's happening on New Years Eve at local nightclubs and other venues: Q New Year's Eve at Rocky Tonk: DJ Casey Baker of Q100.3 FM will spin a mix of country and dance hits at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, at Rocky Tonk Saloon and Grill, 333 E. Main St., Medford. A balloon drop will happen at midnight, with more than $2,000 in cash prizes, and a free Champagne toast and party favors. Cover is $10. Call 541-973-2887. The Edge Nightclub & Patio Grand Opening: DJ Catalyst will spin remixes of Top 40 hits at 8 p.m. at the grand opening of this new nightclub, 23 S. Riverside Ave. Look for a balloon drop at midnight, with $1,000 in cash and prizes, along with a Champagne toast and party favors. Tickets are $5 in advance, and available at Discount Computers, 3001 Crater Lake Ave., Suite 102. Tickets will be $10 at the door. The Bohemian Club: DJ Chili Dog will spin an eclectic mix of dance music at this popular night spot, 123 W. Main St., Medford. The music starts at 9 p.m. and can be heard on two dance floors, one upstairs and one downstairs. There will be a toast at midnight, along with party favors. Music at St. Mark's: A New Year's Eve concert featuring Dan Gibbs (baritone), Laurie Ann Hunter (piano and harp), Mandee Light (soprano), Christian Mathisen (storyteller and singer), Drew Raby (harp) and Margaret R. Evans (organ) playing a variety of music will begin at 7 p.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 140 N. Oakdale Ave., Medford. A gala reception will follow. Admission is free. Mad Hatter's New Year's Eve Party: This lively family event will include theme-related crafts, a tea party, food, dancing and a New Year's Eve countdown from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Ashland library, 410 Siskiyou Blvd. Call 541-774-6995 or see www.jcls.org. Global Peace Dance: A New Year's Eve celebration with dances for universal peace, praise and singing will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the former Headwaters building, corner of Fourth and C streets, Ashland.
