Leadoff hitter Olivia Lethlean went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Janelle Rodgers drove in three runs to pace the Class 6A Black Tornado (22-4), which opens the state playoffs Monday against Glencoe. Sydney Beck and Brie Sheperd each had two hits to lead 5A Crater (11-15), which hosts Corvallis in a play-in game Friday. The Comets opened a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Abbi Pearce doubled and scored on an error and Sheperd later added an RBI double to plate Olivia Ryerson. North Medford tied the game by the third inning on a pair of RBI flyouts by Rodgers that scored Lethlean each time but the Comets answered with a fifth-inning run on a double by Beck and RBI single by Ryerson. The Black Tornado took control in the bottom of the fifth when Lethlean got the ball rolling on a bunt single and Taelor Mayben drew a walk. Tra Kucera and Rodgers followed with RBI singles, and each later scored on errors. Teanna Gonsalves earned the win for North after allowing one earned run on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts in five innings. Sarah Thomas pitched two scoreless innings of relief. SOUTH MEDFORD 5, HENLEY 4 : South Medford sophomore Pat Moore struck out 13 and didn’t allow a hit in her five innings and the Panthers used a two-run surge in the fifth inning to separate from Henley at South Medford High. Hannah Newman went 2-for-3 with one RBI and Jeryka Johnson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored for South Medford (22-5), which opens the 6A playoffs Monday against Reynolds. Henley (18-8), last year’s 4A state runner-up, scored on an error and a two-run single by Maddie Hilyard to tie the game at 3-all in the top of the fifth. The Panthers regained the advantage on an RBI groundout by Moore that plated Bailey Tatum in the bottom of the frame, and tacked on the eventual winning run two batters later when Johnson scored while Krystal Williams was in a rundown between first and second base.
