Mail Tribune / Jamie Lusch A Central Point man suspected of shooting and killing a woman Tuesday morning on Truax Road was found by sheriff's deputies six hours later hiding in the attic of the house the couple shared. Wade Eugene Phillips, 42, was arrested at about 3:15 p.m. after Jackson County sheriff's deputies found him hiding in a corner of the attic at his home at 6522 Truax Road. Law enforcement had been searching the area around the home for hours, as they initially believed Phillips had fled. Dispatch received a report of shots fired and a traumatic injury at the home at about 8:50 a.m. Deputies who responded couldn't get an answer at the door. Police, fire departments and ambulances blocked off the road. After unsuccessful attempts to contact anyone in the house, deputies went in and found a woman, believed to be Phillips' partner, dead inside. At least one child in the home escaped without injury, according to the sheriff's department. Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Nathan Sickler would not comment on how many residents were in the house. A bulletin notifying other police agencies about an attempt to locate the suspect was sent out around 11 a.m. A SWAT team and police dogs canvassed the area for several hours, with traffic restricted on Wilson Lane and Truax Road. What led up to the shooting remains under investigation. "We don't know the full back story. We don't know what was going on," Sickler said. State court records show no criminal history for Phillips in Oregon. The case remains under investigation by the Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit. Forrest Miller, who lives just down Truax Road from Phillips, didn't hear any commotion or shots fired, but his girlfriend noticed police cars in the neighborhood Tuesday morning. "I walked outside and saw there were like 30 cops out front," Miller said. He saw a body carried from the home, he said. Miller said Phillips and the home's other occupants had lived there about six months. The neighborhood has been mostly quiet for the 22 years he has lived there, he said.  "(I'm) a little in shock.
