Is there some particular reason that it differs from other school districts, like Central Point School District 6 or Ashland School District 5? — Bob R., Ashland Back in the 1920s when Medford school opened, it was given the number 49 because it was the 49th school district organized in Oregon. But as time went by, school districts across the state began consolidating to improve programs and save money. Jackson County was no exception. In the late 1950s, Oregon enacted a law requiring all districts consolidating with other districts to adopt the number 5 and the letter C in their identifying number — hence 549C. Advertisement The law was in effect from 1957 to 1959, when it was repealed. Six independent districts joined Medford: Griffin Creek, Oak Grove, Jacksonville, Ruch, Lone Pine and Howard.
