Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 3, 2005 Bruhns guides North past Lakeridge LAKE OSWEGO — Darren Bruhns answered a big question for North Medford Friday night. Bruhns, a promising athlete, was given the job to run a Black Tornado offense that only returned one starter — tackle Tim Endecott. Starting his first game, the junior quarterback orchestrated the Black Tornado to a 41-23 nonconference football victory on the road against Lakeridge of the Three Rivers League. The 6-foot-1 Bruhns passed for three touchdowns and ran for another as North Medford overcame an early 10-3 deficit in the season opener for both teams. North Medford turned the game around with 26 unanswered points in the second and third quarters to take a 29-10 lead. Advertisement Junior defensive back Kyle Lamson got the Black Tornado scoring surge started with a 37-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter. Then Bruhns took over. He found Brian Beadle on a 69-yard touchdown reception to put the Black Tornado ahead 17-10 at halftime. Bruhns continued to burn the Lakeridge defense in the third quarter with a 52-yard touchdown pass to Eagle Point transfer A.J. Nichols and a 9-yard scoring strike to junior Troy Driskill. The Pacers came back with two straight scoring passes from quarterback Daniel Curtis to Taylor Young to cut the Black Tornado lead to 29-23 entering the fourth quarter. Again Bruhns stymied the Lakeridge surge with a 19-yard touchdown run. North added a 7-yard TD run from Ryan Folsom to complete the scoring. Bruhns rushed for 100 of his team-high 112 yards in the second half. He also passed for 199 yards on nine completions. North Medford added 172 yards on the ground and finished with 371 yards in total offense. The Black Tornado (1-0) will return to the Portland- area next Friday for a matchup with Mount Hood League foe Central Catholic at PGE Park. EAGLE POINT 41, SOUTH SALEM 21 — At Eagle Point, Kris Butler rushed for three touchdowns and Brandt Nevin accounted for three scores as well in leading Eagle Point to a runaway nonconference victory. Butler, a 5-foot-7, 160-pound junior, scored on runs of 1, 5 and 23 yards to help the Eagles to a 28-7 lead before South Salem could strike right back with a 78-yard kickoff return by Julian Carrera-Harris in the third quarter. Undaunted, Eagle Point answered the challenge with more solid play from first-year starting quarterback Nevin, who fired a 19-yard scoring strike to Mychal Williams and added a 7-yard TD run to boost EP’s lead up to 41-14. Butler finished with 123 yards on 17 carries, while the junior Nevin was 11 of 13 passing for 145 yards with no interceptions and two TDs, including a 32-yard scoring pass to Tyler Chase in the second quarter. EP junior Shane Tomich chipped in with 17 carries for 81 yards, while Nevin carried nine times for 33 yards. The Eagles’ defense harassed South Salem quarterback Doug Bloom all night, coming up with a handful of sacks while limiting him to 10-for-22 passing and only 86 yards through the air. MCNARY 28, GRANTS PASS 7 — At Grants Pass, McNary’s Kyley McCrae lived up to his billing as one of the state’s top tailbacks as the senior rushed 17 times for 271 yards and four touchdowns to rally the Celtics. Grants Pass managed a 7-0 lead at halftime on a 16-yard pass from Ryan Peterson to Austin Wiersma, but little went the way of the Cavemen after that as five second-half interceptions doomed the hosts. McCrae scored on runs of 62, 1, and 71 yards in the third quarter to break the game open, then tacked on a 5-yard score in the fourth to close it out. GP standout tailback Craig Dolmage had 115 yards on 18 carries. ROSEBURG 25, WILLAMETTE 7 — At Eugene, Roseburg totaled 317 rushing yards thanks to dominating performances from seniors Jimmy Zhu and David Russell in defeating Willamette in the nonconference game. Russell didn’t waste any time getting the Indians going, scoring on a 70-yard run just 11 seconds into the game. Russell scored again early in the second quarter, this time on a 2-yard run. Roseburg (1-0) then took a commanding 21-0 lead on the next possession after senior quarterback Brett Stephens threw a 19-yard strike to Micky Schmorde. Russell finished with 98 yards on only five carries, while Zhu’s 20 rushes resulted in 163 yards for the Indians. CRATER 30, MARSHFIELD 19 — At Coos Bay, senior quarterback Brian Theis threw for four touchdowns as Crater upset perennial state playoff team Marshfield of the Midwestern League. Theis’ 30-yard touchdown pass to John Wasniewski gave the Comets a 10-0 second-quarter lead. Marshfield answered with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Royce Stacey to John Parrish and an 80-yard punt return by Andrew Simpson with just 45 seconds left before halftime as the Pirates grabbed a 13-10 lead at intermission. Theis returned the momentum the Comets’ way with third-quarter TD passes to Tyler Davis and Jesse Warren. Marshfield cut the Crater lead to 24-19 on a 4-yard Stacey to Parrish pass in the fourth quarter. But Theis hooked up with Warren on a 28-yard score to complete a seven-play, 66-yard drive with about five minutes left in the game. Theis finished with nine completions for 278 yards. Charlie Reina paced the Crater ground game with 123 yards on 14 carries and Callan Hartzer added 59 yards rushing. Crater totaled 461 yards in total offense, while limiting the Pirates to 179.
