Leave the engine idling through the whole process or turn the engine off and on as the line progresses? Seems like neither is a good answer! Thanks! -- J. Ellicott, Medford For any stop lasting more than a minute, most information we've found says you should shut off the engine. That probably excludes drive-throughs. OK, that's the straight answer. But let's look at it a different way. The best way to conserve gas is to park the car and walk inside to place your order. Or better yet, stay at home and cook dinner (and save on your food bill, too.) Not only is it better for your fuel bill, it's also better for your midsection because you're burning a few extra calories to get (or make) your food. It's far better for YOU to burn fuel than for your car to burn it. But drive-through time is a mere pittance compared to fuel lost in other driving endeavors. Here are some other gas-saving tips: Avoid rapid acceleration. Anticipate traffic so you're not gunning the engine only to hit the next red light. When accelerating from a stop with a manual transmission, shift up soon. Drive at slower highway speeds. You lose 20 percent or more in fuel economy at 75 mph than 55 mph. Remove extra weight; 100 pounds may cost you 1 mpg. Avoid roof racks and remove them when not in use. Use cruise control. When city driving, roll down the windows to keep cool.
