Medford car theft suspect arrested after quick foot chase Tyson Manney Thursday Oct 27, 2016 at 10:18 AM Oct 27, 2016 at 5:26 PM Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune @RyanPfeil A man suspected of stealing an SUV and fleeing from Medford police last week was arrested Wednesday. Tyson Alexander Manney, 26, was arrested at about 10:50 p.m. near the Big Lots store in the Bear Creek Shopping Center, police said. Medford police Lt. Kerry Curtis said an officer spotted Manney on a bicycle, and when the officer approached him, Manney bolted on the bike. "The officer quickly caught up to him on foot, and he ultimately surrendered," Curtis said. "They didn't even get out of the parking lot. It was just a quick little chase." Manney remained Thursday in the Jackson County Jail without bail on a probation violation and charges of attempt to elude, first-degree theft and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. On Oct. 19, police received a report that a white, newer-model Jeep Cherokee had been stolen, and information about the theft was posted on a local Facebook page. A witness soon spotted the vehicle at Roberts Road, and police chased it but had to back off near North Medford High School because of how fast the vehicle was traveling. Police allege Manney was the driver of the stolen SUV. Officers later recovered the undamaged vehicle near McAndrews Road and Bonita Avenue. Police said vehicle thefts in the city are on the rise. Year to date, 289 car thefts have been reported, a nearly 14 percent jump from the 254 reported through the end of October 2015. Police urged people not to let cars idle as they warm up in the driveway, and to conceal spare keys. "Older cars are also being targeted, as they can sometimes be started without a key," a post on the Medford police Facebook page said.
