NFL DRAFT Rams take Beavers' Mannion in third OSU's Nelson, Oregon's Fisher, Grasu also go on Day 2 Comment By Corvallis Gazette-Times MailTribune.com By Corvallis Gazette-Times Posted May. 2, 2015 at 12:01 AM By Corvallis Gazette-Times Posted May. 2, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Sean Mannion got the call he was waiting for a few minutes before 8 p.m. on Friday evening. Mannion was sitting in his parents' living room in Silverton watching the third round of the NFL draft when he looked to see who was trying to reach him. He didn't recognize the number, but noticed it was a Missouri area code. Mannion took the call. It was Les Snead, the general manager of the St. Louis Rams. Snead told Mannion to hold for a moment so he could put coach Jeff Fisher on the line. The conversation was quick and to the point. "He asked me if I was excited and if wanted to be a Ram," Mannion said. "I said, 'Yeah.' " Mannion was taken with the 89th pick. Beaver teammate Steven Nelson, a cornerback, went Kansas City in the third round, No. 98. Oregon offensive tackle Jeff Fisher went in the second round, 58th, to Cincinnati, and the Ducks' Hroniss Grasu, a center, went in the third round, 71st, to Chicago. Although no player can count on getting picked by a specific team, Mannion said he had a gut feeling about the Rams. The Rams were among the teams that showed extra interest in Mannion during the time leading up to the draft. Team personnel conducted a formal interview and worked out Mannion. "It can't get any better than this," Mannion said. "St. Louis was a team I felt really good about the whole time. I thought St. Louis would be a really great spot and for it to finally happen, it felt like it was all by design." Mannion will join a team that traded Sam Bradford for Nick Foles in the offseason. The Rams also have Austin Davis, who got extensive playing time in 2014 when Bradford was injured. Nelson wasn't far behind Mannion. The Chiefs also drafted former Washington cornerback Marcus Peters in the first round. Nelson made a point of running the 40 at the OSU pro day after clocking a 4.49 at the combine. "I heard it ranges from 4.38 to 4.45, so I'm happy with that," Nelson said after his workout. Nelson played two seasons for the Beavers after transferring from the College of the Sequoias. He finished his junior year with six interceptions, one for a game-clinching touchdown at San Diego State, and was a Pac-12 Conference honorable mention selection. He was a second-team all Pac-12 pick after his senior season.
