That issue is to act so that we do not preclude a livable future for our young people and for future generations. It is unethical, probably illegal, and just plain wrong for us as adult members of our presumably intelligent and social species to OK a project that would multiply the ravages of climate change. No job, nobody's bottom line justifies such behavior. Our choice here at home in Oregon should be to protect our rivers and streams, to prioritize the safety of rural and more populated communities, to provide constructive jobs, to respect protective federal land management plans and private property rights. Yes! But above all, we must not participate in the destruction of our children's future. JoAnne Eggers Ashland Easier to believe It'll be much easier to believe the words of our leaders when the following two things happen: 1. Barack Obama declares the White House to be a gun-free zone. 2. The pope invites war refugees to live in the Vatican. Ron Smith Medford Listen to the people The Medford City Council OKs medical marijuana, but stupidly rejects recreational sales of pot. All over the state, cities OK the use of recreational pot and tax the sales thereof. I am 90 years old and smoked pot 40 years ago without harm to anyone. In Europe, countries have legalized pot for years. We need councilors with brains who obey what the people have voted into law. It will empty the jails of pot users and bring income to the city. Edmond Dantes Vongehr Medford Ashland's deer divide I guess we're all pretty tired of the Deer Divide, but allow me to point out: There are too many deer in town because their three main predators have been eliminated by man: wolf, cougar and man, because he's not allowed to hunt within city limits (but he's allowed to amass an arsenal at home). This begs two questions: Why is it OK for man to kill deer outside city limits (I hardly dare hike during hunting season), and how many of the "don't touch the deer" faction eat meat? Of the many downsides of deer running rampant in Ashland, among the saddest are the massive fences being erected to keep them out, thus giving the town an air of fortification inimical to neighborliness and community (I'm sure the fence companies are happy, though). I have had some scary encounters with deer while on foot and bike. They also pose a great danger to drivers. The lone cougar who made the mistake of taking a nap in an Ashland tree a few years ago was immediately killed with a great show of force. The deer, meanwhile, are allowed to become more and more of a nuisance and a danger. Julia Sommer Ashland National smokescreen President Obama has stated that global climate change is the greatest danger facing America. I would seriously differ and ask President Obama where he rates the national debt as a threat to America. The national debt is now about $19 trillion and growing at the rate of $500 billion to $1 trillion annually and represents the ultimate threat to America; all else is a smoke screen. At the current rate of growth it could take as few as five years to reach the point when America cannot service its debt. This is bankruptcy! When the debt can no longer be serviced we are out of business. I don’t see climate change putting us out of business; only deeper in debt. We are now faced with raising the national debt limit, once again. Instead of our elected leaders taking steps to greatly reduce our expenses and therefore our debt, they continue to raise the borrowing limit. This is like getting a higher credit limit on your credit card in lieu of reducing your debt. Common sense must prevail. Wake up to the true threat to America and tell your representative to stop the bleeding!
