Once that need is filled, donations may be distributed to others in need. Fresh surroundings have given this preteen girl a chance to reclaim her childhood since being raped by an older boy she trusted. Reclaiming items she and her family lost in the recent transition also will help them feel whole again. The middle-school-age girl and her 10-year-old brother left behind clothing and favorite toys when a friend’s small car transported them and their mother to a new home in the Rogue Valley. The mother, 39, works two jobs. Yet money is tight, and with only enough funds for basic necessities, the “extras” that so many families take for granted at the holidays are out of reach for this family. A colorful tree, a festive meal and a few gifts would set the stage for building new holiday traditions in a community that has been so welcoming. A friend connected the mom and her kids to the Jackson County Sexual Assault Response Team, which helped them find housing and counseling for the girl. Although her assailant was convicted of the crime, his popularity touched off a backlash against the girl, who was threatened and subjected to profanities at her former school, in summer camp and on social media. Here, the specter of sexual assault no longer haunts the girl’s every step. Riding to their new schools would be possible if the girl and her brother had bicycles and helmets. And gift cards to Fred Meyer, Target or the Rogue Valley Mall would allow them to pick out something for themselves. The mother could buy groceries and household items with gift cards to a big-box store.
