The part about the license is in blue, meaning it’s new. Does this mean I used to need one of these licenses to catch crayfish? Have I been breaking a law I didn’t even know about? —Wallace R., Ashland Don’t worry, Wallace. You haven’t been fishing for crayfish, or crawdads, illegally. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has not required an angling license for crayfish fishing, but there was some confusion in 2004 after the state’s new "shellfish" license was required for crabbers and clammers along the coast. The agency added the new language just to ensure people like you that you’re not breaking the law, says Rhine Messmer, an ODFW biologist who oversaw the regulations revisions for 2005.
