Kulig erupts in Phoenix girls soccer triumph ROGUE RIVER Phoenix first-year girls soccer coach John Doty has been waiting for a breakout game offensively from the Pirates experienced players. Going into Saturdays District 5 opener against Rogue River, freshman Sarah Kieffer had been the Pirates leading scorer through six games. But Doty got his wish when senior midfielder Annie Kulig exploded for three goals and three assists as the Pirates overwhelmed Rogue River, 9-1. Phoenix junior Helen Shorland contributed two goals and senior Chelsi Clark added two goals and two assists. "Weve been wondering when our seniors would show up," said Doty. "Our goal scoring hasnt been coming from our experienced players." Shorland opened the scoring in the fifth minute off an assist from Clark. In the 32nd minute, the Pirates upped the lead to 2-0 on freshman Kelly Rileys goal, with Clark providing another assist. The Chiefs got their lone goal four minutes later when Rachel Hinze took the ball away from a Phoenix defender and deposited a shot from the left edge of the penalty box inside the far post. The Pirates got a gift near the end of the half when Kulig blasted the ball from 15 yards out and the ball hit a ducking Clark in the back of the head, redirecting the shot past goalie Jenny Harryman. "That was huge," said Doty. "It was a back-breaker for Rogue River." Kulig scored a pair of unassisted goals within a minute of each other early in the second half to break open the match. After Phoenix took a 6-1 lead, Doty cleared his bench. HIDDEN VALLEY 4, ILLINOIS VALLEY 1 At Cave Junction, first-half goals by Shea Ford and Kim Hill staked Hidden Valley to a 2-0 lead at intermission. Ford scored in the third minute and Hill hooked a corner kick into the net at the 25th minute. The Mustangs (6-0, 1-0 District 5) opened the second half with goals from sisters Alyson and Ashley Elledge. Illinois Valleys Rachel Pierce scored at the 70th minute. Hidden Valley outshot the Cougars, 24-7. NORTH VALLEY 6, MAZAMA 0 At Merlin, junior forward Maloree Enoch scored three goals and Jessica Friedman added two goals and two assists for North Valley in its District 5 season opener. The Knights (5-1, 1-0 Dist. 5) led 4-0 at halftime on a pair of goals by Friedman and one goal apiece from Enoch and junior Viola Washburn, who collected her first varsity goal. Enoch now has 23 goals on the season. HENLEY 2, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 1 Kali Warrens eighth goal in six matches wasnt enough for Cascade Christian as visiting Henley made two first-half goals stand up for the District 6 triumph at Hawthorne Park. After Henley (2-3-1 overall) took the lead in the 10th minute on a goal by Becky Schwartz, Warren dribbled through a crowd and deposited the ball into the left corner of the net to tie it. But with four minutes left in the half, Henley regained the lead on a Jenny Olliffe score. Midfielders Aime Sumrall and Kayla Zielke played solid defensive for the Challengers, who dropped to 4-2 overall.
