Greer, chairman of the springs water commission, was filed with City Recorder Gillette yesterday afternoon. The papers contain 499 signatures. These will be passed upon by city officials for verification. In the meantime Greer has five days within which to either resign or make answer in rebuttal and the opposition has a like privilege in further establishing its contention. Greer has announced in the Tidings that he will never resign while under fire. The recall is the outcome of charges that Greer awarded important contracts, aggregating $100,000 without first soliciting competitive bids. This is the second instance of a recall being launched against a city official of Ashland. The first was directed against Mayor Snell several years ago in connection with paving complications. The question was settled at a special election in which Snell won out over his opponents by a vote of two to one. ASHLAND AND VICINITY The normal school at Monmouth will graduate 168 seniors this year exceeding last year's class by 145. Every county in the state is represented, and among the list are the names of Winifred G. Spencer and Pina Benedict of Ashland, also Grace Milam of Gold Hill, and Earl Brunk of Salem, former residents of this city. The 1916 commencement will be the 33rd in the history of the institution and the exercises will begin this week. A portrait of Mary Dunn, who celebrated her 80th birthday anniversary here recently, appeared in last Sunday's Oregonian. She is one of a trio of sisters, the other two being Mrs. Martha Gillette and Mrs. Ann Russell, daughters of Isaac Hill of Tennessee, who came to this locality with their parents in 1853, and who still reside here. At the birthday observance among 35 near relatives present, four generations were represented. Mrs. Dunn is the mother of Mrs. J. K. Van Sant and George W. Dunn of this vicinity.
