Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend April 13, 2005 Sports Letters Angry with radio change I, like others, lament the passing of ESPN radio, but I am more upset at the loss of the only link to Blazer games. As a longtime fan, I can recall this being a long process. Years ago the games were on 880-AM, and when the games conflicted with local sports, it would be tape-delayed after the high school game. Then they moved the games to 610-AM, and less and less games were tape-delayed. Then they changed that station to a Hispanic station and moved the games to 580-AM. This AM station was the worst to try and pick up inside my workplace because of its weak signal, but I listened when I could. With this change, they stopped tape delays all together. Now, they won’t broadcast any Blazer games. They’ll carry SOU and Oregon games, but that’s it. So we can get women’s tiddlywinks but not the state’s only pro team. What this valley needs is a station that will cater to the needs of a vast sports market, one that airs Blazers games and other games on other networks as well as sports talk. I am truly upset with Radio Medford and will be boycotting all their stations from now on, which is a shame because I liked their new MIKE 93.7. Prior to my older son going away to college, he painstakingly and deliberately brought me up to date of every hot topic or issue, not always by choice. I found, besides missing my son, I missed that knowledge and trivia. So, I tested the waters with The Tony Kornheiser Show, found Mike and Mike, gathered speed with Dan Patrick, came to accept Colin Cowherd and later unwaveringly wandered into the Jungle with Jim Rome. GameNight and GameDay appropriately followed. Sports journalism brings refreshing and articulate insight into all aspects of life — not just athletics. Come on, Ron Hren, step up to the plate and bring back ESPN. You will be forgiven for your brief lapse of judgment; no questions asked. Just bring it back! Sports fans are competitive and have banded together. This ain’t over till the fat lady sings. — Dyane Hislop, Medford Advertisement Bring back the Jungle As a Spanish-speaking local, I’m sickened by the loss of sports talk radio on 580-AM. Another Spanish-speaking radio channel is not needed. I listened to Jim Rome and the ESPN crew every day at work with all my co-workers and with my son on my days off. Please bring the Jungle back to Medford and stop this nightmare. — C. Wallace, Medford Will sports radio return? Why did KTMT 580-AM change its format? The only sports station in the listening area, where was the competition? I used to listen to KTMT sports all day. The best thing I had to look forward to was listening to the sports station because I cannot get out like I used to, so I enjoyed sports on the radio. I liked the 49ers, A’s and Giants. Now, how can I listen to them if all I have is a radio? Is there ever a chance that we will have a sports radio program again? When? What about the local sports? Do we lose those as well? Some day I hope we get answers. Like putting it back on the air. This was written, with help, by Aaron Coats. To those with disabilities, it was nice to have a way to participate, even if it was only by living a dream through the radio. It’s sad that nothing was asked of the public as to what we would like before the sports programming was pulled. — Aaron Coats, Central Point Radio move perplexing I am at a total loss when it comes to figuring out why Radio Medford decided to pull the plug on the only sports radio that this valley has. I am a 53-year-old woman, which tells you that listeners to sports radio are not limited to young men, or to men in general. I listened to that station whenever I got in my car; I turned it on and listened from before 7 a.m. into the afternoon. I listened also to the Jim Rome Show, to the A’s baseball games and to Blazer basketball, all of which are not even a part of ESPN radio. To replace KTMT-580 with a Hispanic radio station seems even odder; the population of Hispanics in the Rogue Valley is under 10 percent, and it’s my understanding that there is already a Spanish-speaking station. I find this an insult to the sports community and would like to understand why it was done.
