Marty Dupree Hilliard, 29, of the 2900 block of Fairweather Drive, was arrested Monday after the wild chase between Rogue River and Gold Hill, said Rogue River Police Chief Ken Lewis. "It was the typical ‘I’ll do anything to get away from the cops, including (being willing to) die,’ " Lewis said. At about 3 p.m., a Rogue River police officer who knew that Hilliard was wanted on several felony warrants began following him down North River Road after first seeing him at a downtown car wash, Lewis said. Instead of pulling over, Hilliard, in a 1999 Lincoln Navigator, sped up and entered I-5 near Valley of the Rogue State Park. From there, he headed north on the freeway at high speeds until slowing to about 50 mph and swerving into the center median near milepost 47, Lewis said. Advertisement Hilliard drove into the southbound lanes of I-5 and crashed into a rented U-Haul truck driven by a 60-year-old Fair Oaks, Calif., woman, according to an Oregon State Police report. The woman was not injured but her rented truck was disabled and towed from the scene, Lewis said. Hilliard’s SUV received rear-end damage in the wreck, but that didn’t stop him. He continued south toward Gold Hill at speeds that reached 110 mph, sometimes driving along the freeway’s right shoulder to pass other vehicles, Lewis said. Hilliard got off the interstate in Gold Hill at Exit 40, where he ditched his SUV and ran up a nearby hill after driving into a metal gate, Lewis said. Following a 20-minute foot chase, Rogue River and Gold Hill police officers, along with a pair of Jackson County sheriff’s deputies, caught Hilliard. Lewis said police inventoried the Navigator’s contents and located drugs, although he would not specify what type. Hilliard was arraigned Tuesday on a felony charge of attempting to elude a police officer in a vehicle, along with misdemeanor charges of attempting to elude an officer on foot and reckless endangering. Hilliard was also arrested on seven felony warrants for failing to appear in court on charges including delivering a controlled substance near a school and being a felon in possession of a weapon, court records show. He was the subject of a Crime Stoppers search in July. He is being held in the Jackson County Jail on $600,000 bail. The investigation is continuing, and Hilliard could face additional charges.
