Phoenix girls roll past Eagles EAGLE POINT � Phoenix got off to a blistering start, scoring three goals in each half, as the Pirates opened the season with a 6-0 victory over Eagle Point. Junior striker Helen Shorland scored twice, igniting the scoring barrage with a 12-yard goal four minutes into the contest. Freshman forward Sarah Kieffer scored the next two goals, taking a pass from Kelly Singleton at the 17-minute mark, then converting on Larissa Wiltrout�s 25-yard crossing pass just before the half. Senior Annie Kulig got into the act 13 minutes into the second half with an assist from Kieffer. Shorland, with another assist from Kieffer, headed in the fifth goal with eight minutes remaining. Singleton scored the final goal on a breakaway. Freshman Kat Cox recorded the shutout. Phoenix was 12-2-2 last year, reaching the state quarterfinals before losing to Philomath. The Pirates return five all-stars from their District 6 championship team: Shorland, Kulig along with defenders Jessica Prisbrey, Chelsi Clark � both seniors � and junior Amber Fry. MOUNTAIN VIEW 2, SOUTH MEDFORD 1 � At Bend, the Panthers took an early 1-0 lead but couldn�t hold on in a non-conference road match. South Medford junior Whitney Grant scored the game�s first goal in the 26th minute. Grant applied pressure to Mountain View�s defense, stealing the ball at the 18-yard mark and then drilling a shot into the net. The Panthers� 1-0 halftime lead was nullified by Jill Hansen�s goal in the fifth minute of the second half. The Mountain View senior added another goal nine minutes later to put the Cougars ahead for good. Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Bryan posted eight saves for South (1-1), with sweeper Kat Narus also providing strong play on defense. CRATER 11, SOUTH UMPQUA 1 � At Gold Hill, freshmen forwards Sarah Lafontaine and Kassidy Reina each scored three goals and accounted for four assists as the Comets improved to 2-1 with the non-conference victory. The Comets cruised to a 7-0 halftime lead. ROSEBURG 10, NORTH BEND 0 � At Roseburg, senior forward Rachel Stribling had four goals and one assist, all in the first half. The Indians (2-1) grabbed a 6-0 lead at the break. Junior midfielder Morgan Downie added two goals and one assists. Roseburg limited North Bend to one shot on goal. ST. MARY�S 6, ROGUE RIVER 1 � At Rogue River, Emily Smith scored four goals and Kimberly Tiger had three assists to pace St. Mary�s to the non-league victory. Rogue River�s Rachel Hinze connected for the opening goal three minutes into the match, but from there the Crusaders dominated. Athena Lawrence and Margret Moore also scored for St. Mary�s, which evened its record at 2-2. Sweeper Shawna Jackson and stopper Katie MacDiarmid led the Crusader defense. GRANTS PASS 1, BEND 1 � At Bend, Grants Pass held a 16-7 advantage in shots on goal and dominated most of the second half before settling for the non-conference tie. Bend scored first 20 minutes into the second half. Staci Fetham of the Cavers tied the match midway through the second half on a breakaway. Sophomore fullback Kirsten Arbogast and senior goalie Alicia Pilcher registered stellar defensive games for the Cavers, now 0-0-2 on the season. KLAMATH UNION 3, HENLEY 1 � At Klamath Falls, Sam Gilbert and Brianne Hackett scored second-half goals for Klamath Union to break a 1-1 tie at intermission. Gilbert also scored the Pels� goal in the first period, while Becky Schwartz converted for Henley.
