Phoenix finishes second at tourney PHOENIX The top-ranked Class 3A Phoenix Pirates won four individual championships and finished runner-up to No. 2-ranked Class 4A wrestling power Crook County at the six-team Phoenix Invitational Friday. Crook County, coach by former South Medford mentor Pete Lucas, had seven individual winners the dual-format tournament. The Cowboys went undefeated in duals, including a 53-10 win over the Pirates. "Score-wise they gave us a thrashing," Phoenix coach Harry Mondale said. "It really wasnt as bad as it sounds. Crook County has been a very solid wrestling team over the years." The Pirates received victories from Brandon Sousa (145), Kyle Kauffman (152), Forest Jacobs (160) and Keanon Ferguson (215). And Phoenix picked up seven seconds. Mondale was most pleased with one of those second-place finishers. "The one that impressed me the most was my 189-pounder Brian Murphy," said Mondale. "He showed signs of learning and doing the things we have asked of him. He was very aggressive." Sousa, a senior who was second at state last season, also caught Mondales attention with his win. "He looked absolutely awesome," said Mondale. "He was very on top of it the whole night." Jacobs defeated two Class 4A state placers en route to his victory and Ferguson demonstrated some outstanding technique and athletic ability, according to Mondale. Third-place Grants Pass picked up a win from Tony Delack (275), while fourth-place South Medford received a winning performance from Ian Rasmussen (119) and a second from junior Ben Vandagrift (125). The Panthers also had third-place efforts from Evan Norris (103), Matt McCoy (135), Ken Myers (145) and Kevin OShea (171).
