PHOENIX Phoenix homecoming parade heavy on pirates Annual event starts at 6 p.m. Wednesday at high school Comment By Tony Boom for the Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Tony Boom for the Mail Tribune Posted Oct. 6, 2015 at 6:08 PM Updated Oct 6, 2015 at 6:11 PM By Tony Boom for the Mail Tribune Posted Oct. 6, 2015 at 6:08 PM Updated Oct 6, 2015 at 6:11 PM » Social News PHOENIX — Senior citizens from Northridge Center dressed in pirate costumes will be among nearly 60 entries for the Phoenix High School Pirate Country Homecoming parade on Main Street beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The senior pirates will ride the route in the living facility’s bus. “They were really excited they could be part of this. This really draws our city together,” said City Councilor Carolyn Bartell, who helped establish the event last year. New this year will be bleacher seating at Second and Main streets, the Jacksonville trolley, local business entries and more car clubs, said Bartell. Northwest Pirate Jack Sparrow will be at the bleachers to greet attendees. Last year’s event had about 30 entries. Phoenix High Principal Jani Hale, who will retire at the end of the school year, is the parade's grand marshal. Also entered are representatives from all Phoenix-Talent District schools, youth groups, community groups, high school clubs, the high school band and vintage car groups. At 6 p.m. the parade will leave the high school grounds going south on Rose Street to First, then to Main, back up to Fifth and finishing back at the school. Following the parade, a barbecue and powder puff game will take place at Phoenix High School. The Pirates take on the Henley Hornets in the homecoming game Friday at 7:30 p.m. Main Street traffic will be diverted for the parade onto Bear Creek Drive, which will have one travel lane in each direction. City officials have worked with school staff on the parade. Tony Boom is an Ashland freelance writer. Reach him at [email protected].
