Orlo McGee, whose career with the department spanned 30 years, was 91, according to a Mail Tribune death notice. In a news release, Medford police said McGee began his career with the department in 1953, working his way up through the ranks before becoming chief 20 years later. The year before becoming chief, in 1972, he attended the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va., only the third Medford officer to have attended the national training at that time. Chief McGee started a traffic enforcement team in 1975 with the goal of reducing crashes in the city, the department release said. During his tenure, serious crimes such as homicide, rape, robbery and assault dropped by double-digit percentages for two straight years — 13 percent in 1981, and 11.4 percent in 1982. McGee retired in Medford. "He made a positive difference in our community that will never be forgotten," the department's prepared statement said.
