South Medford (8-1-4, 6-0-3 SWC) can determine its own destiny. With a win over North Medford on Tuesday at Spiegelberg Stadium, the Panthers will claim the SWC crown. Kyle Owings sparked the Panthers offense as he has most of the season. The senior forward, South's leading scorer, accounted for two goals and an assist against the Wolverines (8-3-2, 5-2-2). "He's an all-around amazingly talented player," said South Medford coach Josh Desmond. "He's a hard worker and is dedicated." The Panthers got a huge boost going into halftime when Josue Reyes broke a scoreless tie on a close-in shot 19 seconds before intermission. Patrick Maloney created the opportunity by causing a turnover in the Wolverine end. Owings gathered the loose ball and found Reyes on a crossing pass near the front of the goal. "That changed the momentum," said Desmond. "We had several missed opportunities in the first half." Early in the second half, Owings was tackled just outside the box and was awarded a free kick that he put in the lower left-corner of the net for a 2-0 lead. Owings struck again in the 72nd minute when a shot from just inside the 18 deflected off a Willamette defender to account for the Panthers’ final score. Erik Ledezma was moved from the midfield to the defensive end and did an effective job for the Panthers in a role he hasn't been playing, according to Desmond South goalie Tim Bangs came up with a handful of saves and recorded his fourth shutout of the season. "We had good game management today," said Desmond. "We showed a lot teamwork and fought through the tough spots." SHELDON 2, NORTH MEDFORD 1 : Sheldon scored on a quick counter attack with 45 seconds to play to steal a Southwest Conference victory at Spiegelberg Stadium. North Medford (4-6-3, 4-3-2 SWC) built a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when Jose Gallegos scored off an assist by Skye Brownlow. Sheldon (7-1-4, 6-1-2) then tied it in the 60th minute before catching the Black Tornado slow getting back after a free kick went over the goal. SPRINGFIELD 6, CRATER 0 : At Central Point, Crater dropped to 0-12 overall and 0-5 in Midwestern League play with the shutout by Springfield (6-3-2, 4-0 MWL) at Dutch Meyer Field. ST. MARY’S 5, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 1 : St. Mary’s senior Bryce Parsons scored a pair of early goals off assists by Alec Robertson, who had five helpers overall, to help the Crusaders clinch the District 5 title at U.S. Cellular. Parsons scored in the third and 14th minutes for St. Mary’s (12-2, 11-0 Dist. 5) before Cascade Christian junior Jesse Fretz supplied an answer on a direct kick to make it 2-1 at halftime. Luke Fry finished a deflected corner kick and then scored on a nice one-on-one effort to open the second-half scoring. Hunter Rothfus capped the scoring with a crisp 18-yard shot. The second-place Challengers fell to 8-3 overall and 8-2 in District 5 play. ROGUE RIVER 3, DOUGLAS 3 : At Winston, Douglas built a 3-0 advantage through 23 minutes but Rogue River responded with three straight goals to earn the nonleague tie. Junior captain Gavin Decker scored in the 24th minute for Rogue River (3-8-1). The Chieftains completed the comeback with two goals by senior Kyle Imhoff, the first on a breakaway in the 67th minute and then one minute later on a header off a free kick by Aaron Hansen.
