Although children need to be aware that Mom or Dad love them, do they continually need to be told? Many factors are involved in the answer to this question. Ethnicity plays a role. Certain ethnic groups are what I call “non-emoters.” They are not outwardly “warm and fuzzy” in many aspects of their lives. It’s not that they don’t love their children, but they have difficulty expressing it. Some offspring of these parents say they know their parents love them and there is no need for them to continually express this affection. Many times they will raise their own children in the same manner. However, other children of “non-emoter” parents wish their parents were more demonstrative in expressing their feelings. Then there are parents who are the opposite. They are “emoters” who, at times, overwhelm their children with hugs and kisses and expressions of love. Psychiatrists believe that the inability of parents to express their emotions to their children can result in various psychological problems. Therefore, they recommend that parents express their love to their children. Makes sense. This message has been heard. Now, it has become almost routine for many individuals, when saying goodbye, instead say, “love ya.” These love yous have become so routine that many times, they lose their sincerity and meaning. There are many other non-verbal ways for parents to express their love to their children. An unexpected hug. The expression on their face when talking to their son or daughter. Being there when they are needed. Going out of their way to make their child happy. Telling them that they love them is also important, but perhaps said with a little more emotion than just representing a casual goodbye. Say it as if you really mean it, and mean it when you say it.
