Hall calls his work watermedia because his images aren't limited to just water-based paint. "Some of the pieces start with water-soluble pencil," he says. "I start with black-and-white drawings that are primarily plein air. The light outside changes so rapidly that I add watercolor or gesso and watercolor to the paper in my studio." Hall's images are contrasts of light and dark and feature rural landscapes, country roads and street scenes from older residential areas. "Each image touches a chord with me," he says. "Everything I've ever felt and experienced in my life goes into each piece somehow." Within all of the elements of art, my foundational aim is to achieve a balance of tightly and loosely rendered areas in my work, sharing the emotion concurrent with my passion. I love the stark value contrasts and varying textures found in nature and endeavor to translate my unique interpretation for the viewer onto a two-dimensional surface," Hall writes about his art. Hall has painted rural landscapes in the Northwest and Southwest since 2004. He earned Platinum Membership in the Watercolor Society of Oregon and many awards in state, national and international competitions. He recently received the Frances Nell Storer Memorial Award for his painting “Oak Burl” in the American Watercolor Society’s 148th International Exhibition in New York. His painting “Creekside” won the Kanuga Watermedia Workshops Award in the National Watercolor Society’s 95th International Exhibition in San Pedro, Calif. He is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and the American Watercolor Society. His work is published in North Light Books' "Strokes of Genius 2: The Best of Drawing Light and Shadow," along with magazines Southwest Art and Watercolor Artist. Hall earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Southern Oregon State College in 1986. His work is represented by Total Arts Gallery in Taos, N.M, and Marta Stafford Fine Art in Marble Falls, Texas. "All That Jazz," an exhibit of Mardi Gras-themed art by gallery artists Dixie Kinser, Millie Clarke, Marilyn Zupan, Ginny Matheson, Ruth Heath, Deanna St. Martin, Carol Sharp and Susie Lee, will also be displayed at the gallery. A reception for Hall and other gallery artists will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at the gallery, 213 E. Main St. Call 541-770-3190. Hall will be on hand to discuss his work. Classical and flamenco guitarist Grant Ruiz and jazz guitarist Dan Fellman will blend the music of Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Cuba, Mexico and more. At Rogue Gallery & Art Center, "Meditations on Daily Splendor: Sarah F. Burns, Sarah Fagan and Karen Rycheck," will open Friday, Feb. 19, and be displayed through March 25. The three artists express the contemplative and sublime in their two-dimensional works. Burns creates florals and still lifes in traditionally rendered oil paintings; Fagan paints ordinary objects with reverence and precision with acrylic; and Rycheck creates abstract mosaics in organic slate. Burns studied contemporary art at Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland and academic realist drawing and painting at Ashland Academy of Art. “I hope to create pieces that people want to live with in their daily lives," Burns says in a press release. "I am deeply inspired by artwork from the past, and I hope to pay it forward by creating objects of truth and beauty that will last for many, many generations.” Fagan earned a bachelor's in fine arts and English literature from Stonehill College near Boston. She uses everyday objects within abstract compositions to create atmospheric acrylic paintings. Rycheck holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Webster University in Missouri. She owns Miss Mosaic in Talent, a shop that specializes in mosaics and ceramics made from slate, marble and other organic materials. Unframed art and other pieces by late Jacksonville artist Eugene Bennett will be available through Feb. 26. This will be the final exhibit from Bennett's estate. Proceeds will benefit the Rogue Gallery Endowment and Oregon Community Foundation.
