The Raiders (2-1) dominated the game statistically, running up a 319-129 advantage in total offense, but struggled in the red zone. "We had chances to open this thing up and we didn’t get that done," said SOU coach Jeff Olson, whose team traveled 22 hours by bus to reach the game. "We won every (statistical) category; we just need to learn how to finish a little better." The Raiders drove 70 yards in 12 plays with the opening kickoff and scored on Mahasin’s short run for a 7-0 lead. Baker’s first field goal on the final play of the first half made it 10-0, and his second 3-pointer at the 10:33 mark of the third quarter padded the Raiders’ lead to 13-0. Advertisement SOU appeared headed for a game-clinching touchdown in the fourth quarter when Rocky Mountain safety Eric Ries intercepted a Brandon Griffith pass on third-and-goal from the Bear 1 and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown with 7:49 to play. The Raiders, who were also denied on a fourth-and-goal rushing attempt from the 1 on the first play of the second quarter, held off the Rocky Mountain rally when Chad Harrell and Toby Walker recovered fumbles to thwart two subsequent Bear possessions. Walker finished with two fumble recoveries, six tackles and two stops for losses. Senior linebacker David Zauher led SOU with nine tackles, while defensive linemen Josh Redeau-Clark and Willis Cooley racked up seven apiece. "Walker was hurt all week in practice, but he came through today," Olson said. SOU’s defense held three different Rocky Mountain quarterbacks to 59 yards passing and allowed the Bears just 70 yards on the ground. Senior wideout Bobby Poeltl starred for the Raider offense with a career-best 11 catches for 121 yards, including a 37-yard catch-and-run that set up Baker’s second field goal. Griffith completed 21 of 37 passes for 216 yards and two interceptions. Bill Jolin was the leading rusher with 56 yards on 17 carries. "We moved the pocket to get Griffith out of harm’s way and he responded with a pretty good game," Olson said. "He made good decisions, for the most part." Women’s Soccer EASTERN OREGON 1, SOUTHERN OREGON 0 — Despite taking 33 shots, Southern Oregon couldn’t find the net and dropped the Cascade Conference game when Eastern tallied in the last minute. Senior midfielder Sarah Flesher’s missile over SOU goalkeeper Melanie Hopkins with 1½ minutes left lifted the Mountaineers (3-2, 2-1 Cascade). It was their first win over the Raiders (1-5-1, 1-2 Cascade) in six meetings since 2001. SOU had a 33-10 edge in shots, including numerous wide-open scoring chances. Freshman Mara Rappleyea and senior all-star Marissa Gillingham each hit the Mountaineer crossbar on the same sequence in the 34th minute. Then sophomore midfielder Julia Reed struck the bottom edge of the EOU crossbar from 20 yards out, and junior Lisa Howard hit the carom over the goal from point-blank range midway through the second half. Moments later, Gillingham muffed an open 5-yarder wide right. Mountaineer goalie Sarah Androlewicz survived the errant Raider barrage with nine saves to earn the shutout. Cross Country SUNDODGER INVITATIONAL — At Seattle, the 19th-ranked Southern Oregon cross country teams made their season debut with a solid performance at the Sundodger Invitational in Lincoln Park. Trevor Palmer and Sean Peterson finished 12th and 13th, respectively, to lead the Raider men to fifth place out of 19 teams. All-American Brynn Cogdill ran 48th in 19:23 over the 5,000-meter course to lead the SOU women. Volleyball SOUTHERN OREGON 30-30-30, EASTERN OREGON 14-13-11 — Junior middle blocker Nicholette Le Bel amassed match highs of eight kills and eight blocks to lead the 11th-ranked Southern Oregon past Eastern Oregon at McNeal Pavilion Saturday. The defending Cascade Conference champion Raiders (10-4, 5-0 Cascade) won their sixth straight match overall and at home. It was their 17th consecutive win over an NAIA Region I opponent dating back to last season. Meanwhile, the Mountaineers (1-9, 1-5 Cascade) lost for the fourth consecutive outing, had more attack errors (34) than kills (20), led only once (1-0 in Game 3) and scored more than two consecutive points only once. Senior hitter Kristin Ferris went 7-for-18 without an error and led all players with 13 digs, and Rachael Baran, Jess Childress and Jaclyn Hamilton-Smith combined for 15 kills in 36 swings for SOU.
