She did it by example. Hubbard, the Panthers’ catcher, belted a three-run double to account for all of South’s runs in a 3-0, Game 2 win over Grants Pass Saturday in a Southern Oregon Conference doubleheader. They were the Panthers’ only runs of the day after having been blanked 1-0 in the opener. The win evened South’s SOC record at 3-3 and "kept us in the hunt" for a playoff spot, said Marshall. Locked in a scoreless duel, the Panthers’ Courtney Guches and Kira Vandergriff hit back-to-back singles to start the rally in the fifth. After a sacrifice bunt by Erin West, Guches was thrown out at the plate on a grounder. Advertisement Kinzie Towry walked to load the bases, then Hubbard lashed the first pitch she saw into left field, emptying the bases. "That’s one thing, you can talk about leadership and pump people up and be a four-year starter and all that," said Marshall, "but leadership is by example and production. She did that. Ashley Roy was 3-for-4 to lead Roseburg (13-1, 5-1 SOC) in the nightcap. Eagle Point had just three hits over both contests and fell to 1-7 in conference. The Hornets scored twice in the seventh inning of the nightcap. Taylor Barrett, Talia Engle and Aleia Fitzgerald each had three hits for Phoenix, which also got two RBIs from Emily Lubonski. In the first game, Fitzgerald had two hits. Butte Falls/Prospect garnered a split and its first win of the season in Game 2 behind the five-hit pitching performance of freshman Catherine Anderson. The Challengers (3-6, 1-5 District 6) used two singles, five walks and an error to eclipse an 11-8 deficit going into the final inning of Game 1. Teresa Gomez had two hits and three RBIs for Cascade, while Bobbie Ross went 3-for-4 for Butte Falls. Anderson struck out six and walked three for the Loggers (1-10, 1-5 District 6) in the nightcap. Brianna Wright smacked a double and triple for Butte Falls and Necia Ames collected two hits for Cascade.
