St. Mary's garners top SCL honors in volleyball In three years as a full-time starter for St. Mary's, Becky Naumes never lost a regular-season league volleyball match. This year, the 5-foot-11 senior middle hitter led St. Mary's to an undefeated season -- the Crusaders' first year in the Southern Cascade League -- and was selected as the conference's most valuable player. She was joined on the first team by teammate Maren Zielony, a junior outside hitter, and Cascade Christian senior middle hitter Natalie Peck. Naumes demonstrated her versatility by leading the Crusaders in kills and blocks and was second in digs. "Becky was instrumental to our success," said St. Mary's coach James Joy, who was the SCL coach of the year. "She's just a good all-around player." This was the second consecutive year Joy garnered coach-of-the-year honors as the Crusaders' coach. In 1997, he was the Big Fir League's top coach. St. Mary's was moved over from the Big Fir this school year. Zielony led the Crusaders in digs and was second in kills. She and Naumes were St. Mary's co-captains this past season. "They've played together for three years now," said Joy. "They have a special relationship, both on and off the court. They really complement each other."
