Clear out food when recycling Why won't the garbage company take pizza boxes for recycling? -- Jim C., Medford Good question, Jim. We put it to Don Cordell, a manager with Rogue Disposal and Recycling. "The answer is, they usually have food in them," Cordell said. Food, he explained, tends to attract "vectors" -- you know them as rats and other pests. Rogue Disposal tries to keep its recycling area clean and also must comply with the rules laid down by the companies that buy material for recycling. "The mills will flat-out reject any products with any food in them," Cordell said. That includes tin cans and other food containers, too. So rinse those cans well before putting them out at the curb.
