Mail Tribune 100, Feb. 7, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 7, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Feb. 7, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Feb. 7, 1916 HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS TO DEBATE MONDAY The Medford high school debating team — Hugo Lundberg and George Henselman — will meet the Ashland high school team at the Medford high school on Monday evening at 8 o'clock, the subject being: "Resolved, that the United States should adopt the essential features of the Swiss system of military training and service." This debating contest is for the championship of the Rogue River valley. Medford has already won from Grants Pass. Ashland has won from Talent. Should Medford win from Ashland Monday evening, it will then meet the high school team of Klamath Falls in debate for the championship of southern Oregon. This debating championship contest has attracted much interest in the schools throughout southern Oregon. It is safe to promise a good house at the forensic conflict on Monday in this city. ASHLAND PLAYERS BEAT THE UMPIRE Referee Stephenson's decisions in the Roseburg-Ashland basketball game at the latter place last night appear to have excited the suspicion on the part of the Ashland players and fans that they favored Roseburg openly and palpably. When the game was concluded, with the result of 21-19, in favor of Roseburg, a number of furious fans seized the referee and, before he was rescued by a number of Medfordites, was severely beaten, it is reported today. Friends of the referee and the Roseburg team got them in an automobile and hurried to this city for a safe and quiet night's rest. LOCAL AND PERSONAL The high school cornet band, under the direction of Professor J. M. Gressley, is improving rapidly. Considering the time during which it has been in existence, its progress is excellent. It is frequently in demand at social and fraternal gatherings in this city lately. Professor Gressley is proud of the boys for their loyalty to their task and their ambition to excel. F. S. Johnson and wife, of Portland, enjoyed a sojourn of a few days in this city, while making an inspection of conditions in the valley. They were greatly pleased with the information acquired.
