Within a very short time, this mother of three has realized many successes, chief among them transcending her fear of domestic violence. A few holiday gifts would commemorate this Medford family’s newfound safety and happiness. A two-bedroom apartment is home for the mother and her children after they left behind abuse, along with all of their possessions, money and food. The now-single mother has a job that meets the family’s basic needs but pays for nothing more. Yet the woman, 31, maintains a positive outlook that is nothing short of inspiring, says Barbara Johnson, executive director of Community Works. The nonprofit organization welcomed the mother and children into its Dunn House Shelter after she placed a 2 a.m. call to HelpLine. Since obtaining a court order to protect herself and the kids — ages 1, 7 and 11 — she attends Community Works’ support groups, stays in touch with her advocate for support and is coming out of her shell, says Johnson. Learning to walk, the 1-year-old girl would benefit from anything that could help her get up and go. She loves musical toys and any others that make noise. The 7-year-old boy is interested in all things comic book-themed. Movies, electronic games and toys would delight him. His 11-year-old brother enjoys spending time with friends but usually doesn’t have the funds to join their activities.
