Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend December 16, 2005 SOU names V.P. for student affairs By JONEL ALECCIA Mail Tribune ASHLAND — A Lewis and Clark College administrator has been named the new vice president for student affairs at Southern Oregon University. Jonathan Eldridge, 36, of Portland will assume the key post Feb. 15, SOU President Elisabeth Zinser announced Thursday. As dean of students at Portland-based Lewis and Clark, Eldridge built coalitions among campus departments, increased student interaction with college trustees and linked courses to career development, Zinser said. He led improvements in the school’s residential programs, including a $21 million construction project. "SOU is very fortunate to have such a strong rising leader for student life coming to our university," Zinser said in a statement. "Jonathan will be good for our vibrant and increasingly diverse residential learning community in Ashland. ..." Advertisement Eldridge assumes the $100,000-a-year post less than a month after Zinser announced she will retire Aug. 31. Zinser said she wanted to compile a strong management team as the university hosts a search for a new president and prepares for required accreditation in 2007. Reached at Lewis and Clark, Eldridge said he had weathered presidential changes before and he welcomed the opportunity to help shape SOU’s "next chapter." "In some ways, it’s a good time. The person has time to come in and get established in that position rather than come in on the tail end," he said. His nearly nine-year tenure in Portland has been marked with energetic efforts to build coalitions among diverse groups, Eldridge said. "Listening to all perspectives is the key, " he said. "I don’t know that agendas too often really conflict. The role of the vice president is to listen to what’s really being said." Eldridge has been Lewis and Clark’s chief student affairs officer for nearly six years. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from Central Washington University, where he was a scholar in the William O. Douglas Honors College. He holds a master’s degree in higher education student affairs from Colorado State University. His wife, Trish Dorr, is a teacher who holds a master’s degree in education from SOU.
