This time of year the sun is occasionally shining early in the morning, and after a few hours, a fog bank rolls up out of the valley and blankets our neighborhood. What’s the atmospheric science behind that? — Eric D., Medford National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Sandler knows exactly what you’re talking about, Eric. “He must be my neighbor,” Sandler said. “I do see that on occasion.” The “why” starts with something called an “upslope breeze,” just a slight breeze generated after the sun rises and the ground starts to warm. It rolls uphill, and if there’s fog, it’ll take it with it, Sandler explained. The phenomenon will continue to develop, with daytime breezes blowing from Medford to Ashland as well as uphill. “We see that all the time from spring to fall,” Sandler said. “We don’t (always) see the fog, but you do get the wind that blows from Medford to Ashland.” At night, that trend reverses, with the breezes cooling and billowing back downhill, though that wind is significantly weaker than it is during the day.
