RAIDER ROUNDUP Kennedy earns 200th win as Raiders roll Comment By SOU Sports Information MailTribune.com By SOU Sports Information Posted Feb. 1, 2015 @ 2:00 am By SOU Sports Information Posted Feb. 1, 2015 @ 2:00 am » Social News ASHLAND — Lynn Kennedy won his 200th game as Southern Oregon University's head women's basketball coach as his 13th-ranked Raiders ran away from Northwest Christian, 84-53, on Saturday night at Riehm Arena. A chorus of Raiders left with solid stat lines: Alexi Smith (14 points, seven rebounds), Ashley Claussen (10 points, five assists), Carly Meister (10 points, five rebounds) and Courtney West (10 points, 10 rebounds). The Raiders (19-3 overall, 10-3 Cascade Conference) weren't especially sharp offensively — they shot 44 percent and were 6-for-18 from outside — but they had a 57-38 advantage on the glass and forced NCU into 27 percent shooting (19-for-70). Kennedy is one win away from leading the Raiders to their third 20-win season in a row. In 10 years at SOU he's amassed a record of 200-103, ranking second on the program's career wins list behind Shirley Huyett (220-111), for whom he briefly served as an assistant before she left SOU for Idaho State in 2001. The frustrating night for the Beacons included a 3-for-25 effort on 3-point attempts. Hannah Frederick scored nine points and Melyssa Weber added eight to lead the offensive effort. SOU achieved separation in the latter half of the first period, turning an 18-15 edge to 44-29 by halftime, making seven of its last eight shots with a pair of Claussen 3-pointers included. Less than seven minutes into the second half, the lead was 30. The Raiders avenged a 95-92 loss at Northwest Christian on Jan. 2. They're 10-0 at home this season. West's double-double was her fifth off the bench. She added three blocks. Men's Basketball NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN 80, SOU 69: At Ashland, Austin Kuemper went for 18 points and eight rebounds, but his Northwest Christian team benefited from a bench that outscored the starters in beating 12th-ranked Southern Oregon. Javonte Byrd scored 14 points, Jack Hackman added 13 and Kyle Ferreira made three 3-pointers for the Beacons (15-7 overall, 8-5 Cascade Conference), whose reserves totaled 29 of their 45 points in the second half. SOU (19-5, 9-4) hadn't lost at home since last season's CCC quarterfinals against NCU. Eric Thompson had 15 points and 15 rebounds and Tim Weber 13 points, eight assists and seven rebounds, but the Raiders went 3-for-16 on 3-pointers and totaled 15 turnovers to NCU's six. Wrestling GUTCHES EARNS AWARD: At San Francisco, Southern Oregon's Brock Gutches, a senior from Crater, won the Dr. Northrup Award for outstanding wrestler for his run to a 174-pound title at the California Collegiate Open, which was hosted by San Francisco State University. SOU's Dalton Urrutia also won at 157 pounds, Tyler Cowger was second at 149, Jacob Abrams was second at 184, Clayton Burtis was runner-up at heavyweight and Devin Poppen was fourth at 133 for the second-ranked Raiders. "We wrestled well under tough conditions in our training schedule," SOU coach Mike Ritchey said. "We won a lot of tough matches today and that's what we are looking for this time of year." Gutches went 4-0 on the day. He had two pins and won two decisions by shutout, taking the championship by fall in 2:26 against Cal Baptist's Christian Smith. Urrutia was stingy as well, taking a 9-5 decision over Cal State Bakersfield's Spencer Hill in the first round and giving up just one point in his next three bouts. He shut out Cal Poly's Joe Granger in the 157-pound title match, 7-0, after moving on with a major decision and a decision.
