How did that face mask get there? By Rachel O'Neal Feb 06, 2022 12:30 AM A A I don’t know what you worry about when you’re lying awake at 2:30 in the morning, but the other night, I was wondering what had happened to my sister’s favorite face mask. She had worn it when she went down to the clubhouse here, she said, and swore she had it when she got back to our apartment. However, she admitted she had worn it around her wrist between there and here, even though I have “suggested” she not do this, as she has lost a mask twice that way. We found both of those masks by retracing her steps and discovering the wayward face coverings in the path ahead. So, I assumed she had lost this latest one between the clubhouse and our apartment. To mollify her offense at my certainty, I helped her look everywhere in our home, unsuccessfully (of course), starting to whine a bit that we could just get another mask. Now, at 2:30 a.m., I lie awake contemplating our upcoming search in our complex, wondering where the dang thing would be. … As I move around in bed, trying to get more comfortable so I can fall asleep, my hand contacts a foreign object under the covers. I pull it out and look at it uncomprehendingly. I get up, turn on the light, and behold my sister’s favorite mask dangling from my hand. Laughing helplessly, I decide not to try and figure out how it got in my bed under the covers. … Any ideas? I look forward to her thrilled expression when I present this treasure in the morning. But look even more hopefully to when she will be able to stash this beloved object in her drawer with all the other mementos of her past. Rachel O'Neal lives in Talent.
