Bank's phones to blame I have a 245 telephone prefix and the bank I use on Crater Lake Highway has the 858 prefix. I call them -- no problem. They call me -- it's long distance. They have questioned the telephone company and are told it is long distance. What gives? -- Warnetta R., Medford Congratulations, Warnetta; you ended up saving your bank some long-distance charges. We called Gary Miller, regional manager for US West, to find out why your bank registered your number as long-distance. Both numbers are local calls, and there should not be any long-distance charge involved, Miller said. Miller worked with the bank's telecommunications provider and tested the two numbers on US West's network. "It was just a simple programming issue with the bank's phone system," Miller said. "They just had the 245 prefix programmed as a long-distance prefix," he said. "Within minutes, they had it programmed correctly as a local call. It's all taken care of."
